Aggies Spike Boise State In Three Sets

BOISE, Idaho - Sophomore setter Chelsea Fowles recorded a career-high six kills, and added 27 assists and six digs to lead Utah State's women's volleyball team to a three-set win (25-10, 25-20, 26-24) against Boise State here Saturday night.

Utah State, who snaps a two-match losing streak with the victory, improves to 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference and 6-12 overall. Boise State falls to 2-5 in league play and 5-12 on the season with the loss.

Senior outside hitter Kris Hymas just missed her second double-double of the season for Utah State as she had a career-high 11 digs to go along with nine kills. Fellow senior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh also had nine kills and added eight digs, while sophomore outside hitter Lori Wilson notched a career-best three service aces. Freshman outside hitter Emily Kortsen also played well for the Aggies as she posted a career-high eight kills and hit .353 (8-2-17).

Jeanette Jenkins had 10 kills and two blocks to lead Boise State, while Sadie Maughan had seven kills and three blocks.

Utah State opened the match by scoring the first six points and quickly led by double-digits at 13-3 as it coasted to the 15-point win. In the first set, USU hit .370 (12-2-27) and held Boise State to a negative .031 (6-7-32) hitting percentage.

Boise State began the second set with back-to-back points and held an 18-15 advantage before Utah State stormed back and scored 10 of the final 12 points to go up two games to none. Osterloh recorded six kills for USU in the second set and Hymas added five as the Aggies hit .276 (13-5-29) and held the Broncos to a .000 (11-11-34) hitting percentage.

The third and final set was back and forth as USU opened with a quick 5-1 lead before BSU scored four straight points. The Broncos eventually took a 20-18 lead only to see the Aggies score four straight points and lead, 22-20. BSU quickly tied the set at 22-all and it was later tied at 24-all before Kortsen recorded back-to-back kills to secure the USU win. Kortsen finished with four kills in the set as Utah State hit .225 (15-6-40). Boise State hit .200 (15-6-45) in the set.

Utah State finished the match by hitting a season-high .281 (40-13-96) and limited Boise State to a .072 (32-24-111) hitting percentage. USU also had 11 more digs (45-34) and five more service aces in the match (7-2), while BSU had 4.5 more team blocks (9.0-4.5) and one fewer service errors (5-4).

Utah State returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 16 when it hosts No. 6 Hawai'i at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
