This Week
Sat., Oct. 18 --- at Pre-Nationals, Terre Haute, Ind., 10 a.m.

• Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams will return to action this weekend when it travels to Terre Haute, Ind., to compete in a pre-nationals meet on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m.

Men, 16th/25 --- at Notre Dame Invitational
Women, 21st/23 --- at Notre Dame Invitational

• Utah State senior Ben Kessen finished 40th to lead the Aggie men to a 16th-place team finish at the Notre Dame Invitational. Kessen, who has now been USU's top male finisher in each of its four meets this fall, ran the 8K course in 24:30. USU's next three runners placed 84th, 85th and 86th, respectively, as juniors Jason Holt and Steve Strickland, and freshman Brian McKenna all posted times of 24:58. Other Aggie men to compete were freshman Daniel Howell who came in 131st (25:25), sophomore Nick Bolinder who finished 187th (26:22), and junior Nate Lloyd who placed 188th (26:30). Senior Caroline Berry was Utah State's top female runner as she came in 108th to help the Aggie women finish 21st out of 23 teams. Berry completed the 5K course in 18:11. Sophomore Alicia Holt was USU's next finisher as she placed 110th with a time of 18:13, while fellow sophomore Kim Quinn finished 117th (18:15). Other Aggie women to compete were junior Erin Stratton who placed 124th (18:18), freshmen Ruth Hilton and Jessie Chugg who placed 142nd (18:30) and 148th (18:36), respectively, senior Alison Taylor who placed 155th (18:40), and junior Vanessa Gledhill who placed 163rd (18:52).

Sat., Oct. 18 --- at Fresno State, 8 p.m.

• Utah State (6-12, 4-3) will continue Western Athletic Conference play this week as it hosts No. 6 Hawai'i (14-2, 7-0) on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., and plays at Fresno State (5-11, 2-5) on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. USU is 8-34 all-time against the Rainbow Wahine and 7-6 all-time against the Bulldogs.

• Utah State posted a 1-1 record on the road last week with a three-set win at Boise State (25-10, 25-20, 26-24) and a four-set loss at Idaho (25-22, 8-25, 24-26, 16-25). Against the Broncos, sophomore setter Chelsea Fowles posted a career-high six kills and hit .556 (6-1-9) in the match. Senior outside hitter Kris Hymas added nine kills and a career-best 11 digs, while freshman outside hitter Emily Kortsen had a career-high eight kills and hit .353 (8-2-17). USU finished the match by hitting a season-high .281 and limiting BSU to a .072 hitting percentage. Against Idaho, senior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh had a team-best 13 kills, while sophomore libero Christine Morrill had a match-high 15 digs. The Vandals out-hit USU .265 to .068.

• Utah State (1-5, 1-1) continues Western Athletic Conference action this weekend as it plays at Nevada (3-3, 1-1) on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. (MT). USU is 4-13 all-time against the Wolf Pack, which includes a 2-4 road record.

L, 7-30 --- at San Jose State

• Utah State saw its Western Athletic Conference win streak come to a halt with a 30-7 loss at San Jose State Saturday night. The game was scoreless through the first quarter as USU didn't record its first first down of the quarter until three minutes left and SJSU notched its initial first down on the ensuing possession. Both teams combined for nine punts in the opening quarter. USU sophomore punter/kicker Peter Caldwell had five in the first stanza, matching his total from the previous two games combined after one in the Idaho game and four in the BYU game. Caldwell ended the game with 10 punts, the most by an Aggie since 11 at Clemson in 2004. The Aggies were held to 190 yards of total offense, with 142 coming after halftime. Meanwhile, the Spartans amassed 401 yards, including 314 yards passing. USU was led by sophomore QB Diondre Borel with 43 rushing yards and 66 passing yards on 8-of-21 passing. Senior QB Sean Setzer was 5-of-9 for 53 yards with a two-yard TD pass to freshman RB Ronald Scott with 1:50 left in the game to prevent the shutout. Defensively, senior CB Caleb Taylor had 10 tackles and senior LB Jake Hutton had nine stops, including four tackles for loss. Senior CB Roy Hurst had an interception for the second game in a row. San Jose State was led by QB Kyle Reed's 300 yards passing on 28-of-40 for three TD's. David Richmond led the Spartans' receivers with eight catches for 89 yards with one TD.

• Utah State's women's soccer team (7-7-1, 2-0-0) will continue Western Athletic Conference play this weekend with its final two home matches of the season against Nevada (1-9-2, 1-0-0) on Friday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m., and against Fresno State (5-7-1, 1-0-0) on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. USU is 5-2 all-time against the Wolf Pack and 0-3-2 all-time against the Bulldogs.

• Utah State notched a 2-0 record during the week with a pair of shutouts as it defeated Idaho at home, 4-0, and Boise State on the road, 2-0. Against the Vandals, USU received goals from three different freshmen as Shantel Flanary notched two goals, and Summer Tillotson and Marissa Sanchez each scored one. Against the Broncos, USU quickly turned a 0-0 tie into a two-goal victory in the second-half as sophomore Lauren Hansen scored in the 69th minutes and senior Candice Clark scored in the 74th minute to give the Aggies their first-ever 2-0 start in conference play.

• Utah State's men's golf team will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 20-21 when it travels to Cedar City, Utah to face Southern Utah in its annual Ryder Cup style duel.

9th/12 --- at Oral Roberts Shootout

• Utah State's men's golf team finished in ninth place out of 12 teams at the Oral Roberts Shootout with a team score of 926 (312-311-303). Senior Toph Peterson was the Aggies top individual finisher as he placed 23rd with a 13-over par 229 (76-81-72). Senior Tyler Labrum was Utah State's second-best finisher as he placed 33rd with a 17-over 233 (79-77-77). Sophomore Benjamin Schilleman finished with an 18-over 234 (80-75-79) to finish tied for 34th, while senior Devin Daniels tied for 40th with a 20-over 236 (77-84-75). Junior Thad Truman also competed for USU and carded scores of 78 and 79 in his final two rounds after withdrawing during his first 18 holes.

• Utah State's men's tennis team will conclude its fall schedule this weekend as it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the ITA Regionals from Wednesday, Oct. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 19.

• Sophomore Jakob Asplund was Utah State's top performer at the 2008 Utah State Fall Invitational last weekend as he advanced to the semifinals in the main draw. Senior Mike Banks also performed well for USU as he won the consolation finals with a straight sets win against junior teammate Alex Thatcher. Other Aggies to compete during the weekend include senior Matt Braithwaite, juniors Amit Maharaj and Matt Searle, sophomore Bryan Marchant, and freshmen Jordan Barlow, Liran Braun, Brandon Nelson and Jordan Wasden

• Utah State's women's tennis team continued its fall schedule last week by hosting the Utah State Fall Invitational. Senior Bridgette Strickland and sophomore Hailey Swenson led the Aggie women as the duo won the doubles title with an 8-3 victory against a team from Weber State. Both players also advanced to the finals in singles action, with Swenson notching the straight sets win. Other Aggies to compete during the tournament include juniors Cady Andelin and Marie Livingston, sophomore Taylor Perry, and freshman Monica Calleja,
