LOGAN, Utah - Jamie Houston and Kanani Herring each had 12 kills to help No. 9 Hawai'i recorded a three-set win (25-18, 25-18, 25-18) against Utah State here Thursday night. UH improves to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in the Western Athletic Conference with the win, while USU falls to 6-13 on the season and 4-4 in league play with the loss.
Senior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh had 12 kills to lead Utah State, while sophomore setter Chelsea Fowles added five kills, five digs and 21 assists, and hit .429 (5-2-7). Sophomore libero Christine Morrill also played well for USU as she had a match-high 13 digs.
Hawai'i broke open a close contest in the first set with a 4-0 run midway through to take an 18-14 advantage en route to the seven-point win. In the first set, Hawai'i hit .286 (13-5-28) and held Utah State to a .050 (11-9-40) hitting percentage.
In the second set, Hawai'i scored six of the first eight points before USU fought back to tie it at 10-all. UH then went on an 8-2 run to take control and post another seven-point win. The Rainbow Wahine hit .400 (15-3-30) in the second set as compared to a .167 (12-7-30) hitting percentage for the Aggies.
Hawai'i built an early 9-3 lead in the third set and USU could never get closer than three points the rest of the way as it lost, 25-18. In the final set, UH hit .321 (13-4-28) and limited USU to a .032 (11-10-31) hitting percentage.
Hawai'i finished the match by hitting .337 (41-12-86) and Utah State hit .079 (34-26-101). UH also had eight more team blocks (11-3), four more digs (33-29) and three more service aces (5-2) in the match, while USU had one fewer service errors (4-3).
Utah State returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 when it plays at Fresno State (5-12, 2-6) at 8 p.m. (MT).
