FRESNO, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Kris Hymas recorded her second double-double of the season as she notched career-highs with 15 kills and 15 digs to help Utah State defeat Fresno State in five sets (25-14, 18-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13) here Saturday night.
Utah State improves to 7-13 on the season and 5-4 in the Western Athletic Conference with the win, while Fresno State falls to 5-13 overall and 2-7 in league play with the loss.
Trailing 8-3 in the fifth and final set, Utah State rallied behind three kills and a service ace from Hymas to notch the improbable 15-13 win. USU hit .304 (9-2-23) in the final set as compared to a .190 (7-3-21) hitting percentage for Fresno State.
Senior outside hitter Melissa Osterloh added 18 kills and 13 digs for Utah State as she posted her third double-double of the season, and sophomore libero Christine Morrill added a match-high 23 digs as she posted her 14th double-figure dig match of the season.
Brianna Clark had a match-high 22 kills to lead Fresno State, while Baylee Platt added 15 kills and 11 digs.
Utah State began the match with a 7-1 run and coasted to an 11-point win in the opening set as it hit .258 (15-7-31) and limited Fresno State to a negative .143 (4-8-28) hitting percentage.
Fresno State rebounded with a seven-point win in the second set as it rallied from an early 5-2 deficit to even the match. In the second set, FSU hit .364 (16-4-33) and held USU to a .207 (11-5-29) hitting percentage.
Utah State was the team that rallied in the third set as the Bulldogs held an early 5-1 advantage before the Aggies fought back, tied it at 14-all, and went on for the four-point win. In the third set USU hit .219 (12-5-32) and Fresno State hit .190 (13-5-42).
Fresno State never trailed in the fourth set as it recorded the third-point win despite hitting just .085 (15-11-47). Utah State hit .094 (6-3-32) in the fourth set by had just six kills.
Utah State finished the match with a .211 (53-22-147) hitting percentage and Fresno State hit .140 (55-31-171). USU also had 11 more digs (71-60) and one more service error (8-7) in the match, while both teams had six service aces.
Utah State will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Boise State (6-13, 3-6) at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
