LOGAN, Utah - Utah State freshman shortstop Kelley Kaneshiro smacked her fifth home run of the season in game two against Fresno State, as the Aggies fell to the Bulldogs, 6-1, and were run-ruled, 9-1, after five innings on Friday at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field.
Kaneshiro continues to lead the team in home runs and has now moved into the Utah State single season home run list, tying for the 10th spot with Quela Leonhardt (2006) and Kelly Smith (1984).
USU falls to 6-20 on the season and 0-5 in WAC action, while FS improves to 32-5 overall and went 2-0 in league play. Fresno State now leads the all-time series against Utah State, 20-11.
After three scoreless innings in game one, Fresno State's Ashley White hit a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the fourth to put the Bulldogs up, 1-0. FS rallied in the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits, capitalizing on a three-run home run by Caitlin Stiglich.
USU cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth, as sophomore left fielder Mikey Price got hit by a pitch and then scored on a double to right field by freshman right fielder Megan McDonald. The Bulldogs tallied another run in the top of the seventh for the final score.
Utah State junior pitcher Lindsey Benson pitched her ninth complete game this season, as she allowed seven hits, while she struck out eight. Benson moves to 6-14 on the year. Fresno State's Morgan Melloh recorded 16 K's in seven innings of work and walked two and improves to 21-3 overall.
In game two, Fresno State tallied two runs in the top of the first on a two-run home run by Aja Schueber, before Kaneshiro hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. USU junior first baseman Aubrie Stroman walked and McDonald was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Utah State's designated player Kayla Dunn then went down looking, leaving Stroman and McDonald on base, as the Aggies left seven on base overall during the game.
The Bulldogs rounded out their scoring with two runs in the second, three in the third and two more in the fifth for the eight-run win.
USU freshman Tylee Landon pitched two innings, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out two, while sophomore pitcher Stacey Ellingsworth finished out the last three innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out two. Landon falls to 0-3 on the season. Fresno State's Nicole Angene pitched five complete innings, yielding one run on five hits and tallied two strikouts to improve to 5-2 overall.
The Aggies wrap up their three-game series with the Bulldogs on Saturday, March 29 at 3 p.m.
