POCATELLO, Idaho - Despite out shooting Idaho State 19-13, Utah State soccer fell to the Bengals with 16 seconds remaining in the second overtime, 2-1, in Pocatello, Idaho. This was the first loss to Idaho State since 2003 with the Aggies winning the last three matches. This was the first time ever that the Aggies had played an overtime match to open a season.

The Aggies struck first early in the match when junior forward Erin Salmon scored the first goal of the 2008 season 6:41 into the match. Junior defender Lindsey Smart got the play started with a corner kick that was blocked. Sophomore Heather Pond then took the blocked shot and passed it to Salmon who buried it in the back of the net. The half ended with the Aggies clinging to the 1-0 lead.

"It was an interesting match because at times both teams dominated," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "But we didn't capitalize on our chances as much as they did. That was a bit frustrating considering we out shot them 19-13."

The Bengals evened the score at 1-1 at the 55:54 mark of the match on sophomore forward Lauren Ryan's goal off the double assist from Taylor Powell and Katie Miller. Ryan scored Idaho State's first goal of the season from 10 yards out.

Regulation would end with the scored still 1-1.The Aggies came out fast in the first overtime with both Lindsey Smart and Allie Maduell getting off shots. Smart's shot was saved by ISU goalkeeper Michelle Harrison, while Maduell's blast hit the post.

The Golden goal was scored by Idaho State freshman Ashley Aswig with 16 seconds remaining in the second in the second overtime. With Utah State goalkeeper, Ali Griffin pulled out of the goal, Ellen Larsen slid Aswig the ball who guided it into the empty net.

"The thing that we have to take away from this game is that we have a style that works for us and a game plan that goes along with that style," Cairns said. "At times we were able to execute that and at times we weren't. Certainly, Syd (Porter) hitting the cross bar and Allie (Maduell) hitting the post were two tough breaks."

Utah State looks to earn its first win of the season on Sunday, Aug. 24 against Seattle University at 1 p.m. at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.
