LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer started its two-match road trip with a tough 1-0 loss at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Friday night. The Aggies were facing the Mustangs for the first time since they were Big West foes in 2004.

Cal Poly now holds a 9-1 all-time series lead over Utah State. The Aggies' only win came with a 4-3 win in 1999. With the loss, Utah State falls to 4-6-1 and 0-5 on the road this season. The Mustangs pulled even with a 5-5 record with the win.

"We forced their goalkeeper to make big plays," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "In the second half, we had more opportunities on goal. We fought hard, but we came up a little short. In all, it was a pretty good game."

The Mustangs scored the match's only goal at the 15:09 mark of the first half. Carrie Andrews scored her first goal of the season with a header off a cornerkick from Carissa Voegele. Cal Poly was able to make the one-goal lead stand.

Utah State wasn't without several scoring chances. In the second half, the Aggies had seven shots to the Mustangs eight. In the 59th minute, freshman striker Shantel Flanary tested Mustang goalkeeper Coral Hoover off a cross from senior Candice Clark.

Junior forward Erin Salmon also had a scoring chance with a long range shot that was saved by Hoover. In the 85th minute, senior Jessie Malaska passed the ball to senior Candice Clark who just missed tying the score for USU.

The Aggies look to break their season-high two-match losing streak on Sunday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Laramie, Wyo. to take on the Cowgirls at 12 p.m. Wyoming holds a 3-1 series lead over Utah State.

USU then heads home for its final non-conference match against instate rival BYU on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field. Admission to Utah State soccer matches is free.
