LOGAN, Utah - Sophomore forward Tai Wesley led a quartet of double-figure scorers with 15 points and 10 rebounds as Utah State posted a 67-51 road win at Hawai'i late Saturday night. USU improves to 19-1 on the season and 8-0 in Western Athletic Conference play with the win, while Hawai'i falls to 9-10 on the season and 1-6 in league play.
Utah State has now won 14 straight games which is the second-longest active winning streak in the nation behind Saint Mary's (15). USU is also tied with Oklahoma for the best record and most wins in the nation.
Senior forward Gary Wilkinson had 15 points and five rebounds for Utah State, while sophomore guard Tyler Newbold had 13 points. Junior guard Jared Quayle added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the visitors, while freshman forward Brady Jardine had career-highs with 10 rebounds and five points.
Bill Amis had 17 points to led Hawai'i, while Roderick Flemings scored 11.
With the game tied at six, Utah State went into a zone defense that sparked a 16-0 run and led 22-6 with just under 10 minutes to play. USU began its spurt with back-to-back three-pointers from Newbold and ended with a pair of free throws from Wilkinson. USU took its biggest lead of the half at 30-10 on another trey from Newbold and went into the locker room up 17 at 36-19.
Utah State shot a blistering 63.6 percent from the field (14-22) in the first 20 minutes, including 4-of-6 (.667) shooting from three-point range. Newbold was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field in the first-half and scored 13 points. Hawai'i made just 4-of-28 field goals in the first-half (.143), including 0-of-11 from behind the arc. The Rainbow Warriors did make 11-of-12 free throws (.917) to remain somewhat close. USU was just 4-of-8 (.500) from the charity stripe.
Utah State finished the game by shooting 50.0 percent from the field (26-52) and 44.4 percent from three-point range (4-9). Hawai'i shot 28.6 percent for the game (16-56), including just 15.8 percent from behind the arc (3-19). The Rainbow Warriors were 16-17 (.941) from the free-throw line.
Next up for Utah State will be a home game against Nevada on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m., in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
