HONOLULU - Utah State soccer had its unbeaten streak stopped at four matches after a 3-1 loss to Hawai`i on Sunday.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 8-8-1 overall 3-2-1 in Western Athletic Conference matches. The Rainbow Wahine improve to 6-10-1 overall and 2-4-0 in WAC action.
"We showed glimpses of playing well, but overall they out played us," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "Hawai`i is a tough place to play. You have to be focused. You are playing against team on senior day that is trying keep their tournament hopes alive, and they out played us. We have to give them credit."
The Rainbow Wahine got on the board first in the fifth minute of action. Kristyn Shapka scored off a deflection off of corner kick. Shapka deposited a long header to the far post past Utah State sophomore goalkeeper Molli Merrill.
Just over a minute later, the Aggies tied the scored at 1-1 when sophomore forward Shantel Flanary scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the sixth minute. Flanary took a deflection off of a Rainbow Wahine defender and launched a hard shot to the right side of the net. The striker's eighth goal of the season ties her for seventh with Nicole (Feuz) Gooch in single-season goals scored. Gooch is the sister of Aggie freshman Rachel Feuz.
Hawai`i re-claimed the lead in the 32nd minute. Ambree Ako gave Hawai`i, scoring on a penalty kick after she was tackled in the box. Ako celebrated senior night by adding another goal in the 60th minute to give the Rainbow Wahine the 3-1 lead.
Utah State concludes the regular season next week, taking on Louisiana Tech on Friday, Oct. 30 and WAC-newcomer New Mexico State on Sunday, Nov. 1. Against New Mexico State, the Aggies will celebrate senior day and will honor its three seniors, Lindsey Smart, Erin Salmon and Sydne Garner.
