Aggies Fall At Fresno State In Four Sets

FRESNO, Calif. - Utah State's women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match (19-25, 25-15, 20-25, 13-25) to Fresno State here Thursday night in a Western Athletic Conference play. USU falls to 10-7 on the season and 2-3 in league play with the loss, while FSU improves to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the WAC with the win.

Junior middle blocker Katie Astle (Sandy, Utah) had seven kills and hit .778 (7-0-9) to lead Utah State, while junior setter Chelsea Fowles (Hollister, Calif.) had 31 assists, nine digs and five kills, and hit .444 (5-1-9).

Lacey Gera had a match-high 14 kills for Fresno State, while teammate Kelly Mason had a match-high 21 digs.

Fresno State took the early lead in the match with a six-point win in the first set as it hit .114 (11-7-35) and limited Utah State to a .030 (8-7-33) hitting percentage. USU responded with the 10-point win in the second set as it hit .292 (9-2-24) as compared to a .057 (11-9-35) hitting percentage for FSU.

Following the loss in the second set, Fresno State took control with a five-point win in the third set and a 12-point win in the fourth set. In the third set, the Bulldogs hit .289 (16-5-38) and the Aggies hit .182 (12-6-33). In the final set, FSU hit .257 (13-4-35) and limited USU to a .000 (9-9-35) hitting percentage.

Utah State concluded the match with a .112 (38-24-125) hitting percentage and Fresno State hit .182 (51-25-143). FSU also had two more team blocks (10.5-8.5) and two more service aces (8-6) in the match, while USU had two more digs (56-54) and two fewer service errors (7-5).

Utah State will remain on the road and play at Nevada on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. (MT).
