LOGAN, Utah - Junior outside hitter Liz McArthur had 21 kills to lead Utah State in a five-set loss to Idaho (26-24, 19-25, 21-25, 25-16, 19-21) here in a Western Athletic Conference match Saturday.
After falling behind 4-0 in the fifth and final set, Utah State rallied to hold a 12-9 advantage only to see Idaho score four straight points. From there on, neither team led by more than one until the Vandals broke a 19-19 tie with a kill and service ace to win the match.
Utah State falls to 18-8 overall and 6-7 in WAC play with the loss, while Idaho improves to 12-11 on the season and 7-5 in league play with the win.
McArthur (St. George, Utah) added nine digs and hit .259 (21-7-54) in the match for Utah State, while sophomore outside hitter Josselyn White (Smithfield, Utah) had a career-high 16 kills and hit .282 (16-5-39). Senior middle blocker Katie Astle (Sandy, Utah) added 10 kills and hit .529 (10-1-17), and fellow senior middle blocker Shantell Durrant (American Fork, Utah) had nine kills and eight blocks.
Senior setter Chelsea Fowles (Hollister, Calif.) also had a solid match for USU as she finished with eight kills, 11 digs and five blocks, and hit .538 (8-1-13). Senior libero Christine Morrill (Neola, Utah) posted her 28th career 20 dig match as she finished the night with 20 digs, while sophomore libero Laurel Bodily (Idaho Falls, Idaho) had 11 digs.
Allison Walker had 27 kills and 11 digs for Idaho, while Alicia Milo posted 19 kills and Kelsey Taylor had 14.
Idaho led for much of the first set and held a 24-20 advantage before Utah State scored six-straight points for the dramatic 26-24 win. USU hit .209 (18-9-43) in the opening set and UI hit .194 (13-6-36).
Idaho then won sets two and three as it used a 9-2 run in set two to break a 7-7 tie en route to the 25-19 win. The Vandals hit .344 (18-7-32) in the second set and the Aggies hit .321 (12-3-28). In the third set, Idaho used a 6-2 run to break a 16-16 tie to post the 25-21 win. UI hit .378 (18-4-37) here and USU hit .211 (13-5-38).
Utah State regrouped and dominated set number four as it hit .375 (19-4-40) as compared to a .200 (12-5-35) hitting percentage for Idaho. McArthur led USU with an amazing nine kills in the fourth set.
Utah State finished the match with a .262 (77-29-182) hitting percentage and Idaho hit .281 (73-26-167). UI also had six more digs (63-57) and one more service ace (4-3) in the match, while USU had one more service error (4-3). Both teams finished with 10.5 team blocks.
Utah State will return to action on Friday, Nov. 12 when it hosts Nevada at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, USU will honors its four seniors in Astle, Durrant, Fowles and Morrill.
