TIP OFF - Utah State women's basketball (6-5) will host its fourth-straight home game Thursday, Dec. 23 as the Wyoming Cowgirls (8-3) will travel to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The Aggies 2 p.m. game against UW will the first game of a triple header in the Spectrum Thursday as USU's men will finish the third day of the World Vision Invitational hosting a game between Western Michigan and Idaho State at 5:30 p.m. and the Aggie men will take on Troy at 8 p.m.
THE OPPONENT - The Cowgirls lead the series against USU, 13-4. The last time the two teams faced each other was Dec. 17, 2005 in Wyoming where Aggies suffered a 62-43 loss. UW is led by two players averaging double figures including Hillary Carlson averaging 18.0 ppg and Aubrey Vandiver with 17.3 ppg. The Cowgirls most recent win came Tuesday (Dec. 21) when they dominated Montana, 73-51 in Missoula. The Aggies fell to Montana in a close 65-62 game on Nov. 20 in Logan.
LAST TIME OUT - Utah State held off a pesky South Dakota State, winning 60-57, Monday, Dec. 20 in a School Day game, as the USU women's basketball team hosted local elementary children at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. USU improved to 2-0 in School Day games, winning last year's contest. The Aggies also moved to 6-5 on the season, winning six of their last seven games, while the Jackrabbits slid to 4-8. Sophomore guard Devyn Christensen netted four free throws in the game's final 11.9 seconds to seal USU's win, part of Utah State's season-high 20 free throws, the most since at Nevada last season on Feb. 13. THREE-POINTERS TO WIN - USU is 6-0 when shooting better than its opponents from behind the arc. On the season, the Aggies are 46-147 (.309) from the three-point line.
THREE AND THREE - The Aggies are 3-3 in home games and are also 3-3 in afternoon games so far this season.
CODDINGTON IN THE COUNTRY - Alice Coddington leads the WAC in steals with 36 (3.4 spg) which also ranks No. 13 in the nation in seals per game.
80 POINTS GAMES - Utah State had two back-to-back 80 point games and was 2-0 in those games, defeating Utah Valley, 80-66 (Dec. 1) and Northern Arizona, 80-75, (Dec. 4) in overtime.
RECORD-SETTING DAY - The Aggies set a school record shooting 60.8 percent from the field against Utah Valley on Dec. 1 in USU's 80-66 win over the wolverines. The previous record was 58.3 percent against New Mexico State in 1982.
ROAD WARRIORS - USU is 3-2 on the road so far this season. During the 2009-10 season the Aggies went 5-7 on the road overall. The Aggies are only two road-wins away from matching their road wins last year. USU has won its last three road games. The Aggies next road game will be Jan. 1 at Utah.
AROUND THE COURT AGGIES IN THE WAC - Alice Coddington leads the WAC in steals (3.27 spg) and is third in assists (4.27 apg), while Ashlee Brown is fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 14.1 ppg. Brown is also fourth in rebounding, averaging 9.2 rpg. As a team, Utah State is second in steals averaging 11.00 per game and second in assists averaging 15.09 per game.
WHAT WENT WRONG - In five losses, Utah State has shot only 58.2 percent from the charity stripe (53-of-91), while only shooting 24.3 percent from three (19-of-78) in the losses. In the losses, USU's opponents led in the assist category 82-58.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS - Five times this year, Utah State has out-rebounded its opponent, taking the rebound advantage against Utah Valley 27-24, while holding a 46-41 edge against Northern Arizona and against San Francisco the Aggies nabbed 41 to the Dons 31 boards. Against Idaho State USU had 38 rebounds to Idaho State's 64. The Aggies also out rebounded South Dakota State42-37. The Aggies are 4-1 in the when they out rebound their opponents.
SCHLOTT ON THE SPOT - Freshman Jennifer Schlott seems to have found her rhythm on the hardwood. After warming up in the beginning of the season, Schlott came out on fire at Northern Arizona (Dec. 4) with a career-high 13 points, including three three-point baskets. Schlott continued with 11 points in the game against San Francisco (Dec. 8) and added five assists.
HOME SWEET HOME - Freshman guard Jennifer Schlott looked right at home playing in her home state of Arizona against Northern Arizona on Dec. 4. She upped her career high from two points to a stunning 13 in the Aggies 80-75 overtime win against the Lumberjacks. Playing in front of her family the freshman led the Aggies at the point adding three steals and rebounds to her final total in only 15 minutes of action. Junior Ashlee Brown, who is also a native of the Grand Canyon State, also played well in front of family. The forward topped her career-high with 26 points against the Lumberjacks in the come-from-behind win. She also added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She is the only Aggie to have a double-double this season.
OTHER AGGIE TIDBITS - • After coming off the bench for the first two games, Ashlee Brown made her first career start against Montana on Nov. 20.
• While Ashlee Brown was sick, senior forward Stacey Howard made her first career start against Dixie State and also started against North Dakota State.
• Sophomore center Banna Diop has started the season strong by scoring in double figures three times, including a career high and team-leading 17 points against Montana (Nov. 20). Diop is third on the team with 8.9 ppg and second on the team rebounds with 6.2 per game.
• The Aggies are an international team with players from three different countries, including Australia (Stacey Howard, Alice Coddington and Maddy Plunkett), Senegal (Banna Diop) and 11 players from United States, none of whom are from the state of Utah.
COACH PEBLEY - Head coach Raegan Pebley is in her eighth season as head coach at Utah State, which is the longest tenure in the program's history. Five games into 2007-08 season, Pebley overtook the lead for the most games coached in Utah State history (116). She has now coached 211 games for the blue and white. Pebley now has 77 wins as Aggie head coach which places her above Cindy Perkins (51) on the all-time win list.
NEWCOMERS - The Aggies add five newcomers this year from all around the country. Junior transfer Reyneisha Mays joins the squad from Moorpark College (Granada Hills, Calif.) Junior Maddy Plunkett is a transfer from College of Southern Idaho, following in the footsteps of team mate senior LaCale Pringle-Buchanan. The three freshman joining the Aggies this year include Kamie Imai ( Waiakea HS) comes to USU from Pahoa, Hawaii. Jennifer Schlott from Mesa, Ariz. (Mountain View HS) and Stephanie Larson from Tustin, Calif. (Foothill HS).
