MOSCOW, Idaho - Junior Shay Sorensen led Utah State with 10 kills in its three-set loss (25-17, 25-14, 25-16) at Idaho Friday to fall to 7-11 on the season and 2-3 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Vandals even their record at 9-9 with the win including a 3-2 WAC ledger.
Sorensen, an opposite side hitter from North Ogden, Utah added a block assist and hit .375 (10-4-16) in the match, while senior All-American outside hitter Liz McArthur (St. George, Utah) had nine kills, three digs, two service aces and one block assist, and junior libero Laurel Bodily (Idaho Falls, Idaho) finished with 13 digs.
Alison Walker had 16 kills and 12 digs to pace Idaho, while Julia Church added eight kills and five blocks.
Idaho began the match scoring four of the first five points and was never threatened in its 25-17 win. The Vandals hit .364 (15-3-33) in the opening set as compared to a .108 (12-8-37) hitting percentage for Utah State.
Idaho scored the first four points of the second set before Utah State fought back to take an 8-7 lead. The Vandals later used a 6-1 run to take a commanding 16-11 advantage en route to its 11-point win. UI hit .290 (14-5-31) in the second set and limited USU to a negative .067 (7-9-30) hitting percentage.
Utah State held an early 4-2 lead in the third and final set before Idaho went on a 13-3 run and coasted from there for the nine-point win. The Vandals hit .400 (17-5-30) in the third set and USU hit .107 (9-6-28).
Utah State hit just .053 (28-23-95) in the match and Idaho hit .351 (46-13-94). UI also had 11.0 more team blocks (14-3) and three more digs (34-31) in the match, while USU had one more service ace (4-3).
Utah State will return to action on Friday, Oct. 13 when it hosts Fresno State in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 7 p.m.
