Utah State Volleyball Sweeps San Jose State In WAC Opener

LOGAN, Utah - Senior All-American Liz McArthur recorded her eighth double-double of the season and 20th of her career with 17 kills and 12 digs to lead Utah State's volleyball team to a three-set sweep against San Jose State (25-18, 25-20, 25-12) here Thursday in both team's Western Athletic Conference opener.

Utah State improves to 6-8 on the season and 1-0 in league play with the win and San Jose State falls to 5-8 overall and 0-1 in the WAC with the loss.

McArthur, an outside hitter from St. George, Utah, added one block assist and hit .342 (17-4-38) in the match for Utah State, while freshman setter Paige Neves (Otto, Wyo.) had three kills and six digs, to go along with a season-high two service aces.

Utah State also got solid production from its starting middle blockers as freshman Kaitlyn VanHoff (Draper, Utah) had five kills and hit .417 (5-0-12), while sophomore Nicole Gneiting-Theurer (Las Vegas, Nev.) had four kills and hit .444 (4-0-9).

Alex Akana had nine kills to lead San Jose State.

Utah State used a 4-0 run in the first set to break a 7-7 tie and led by as many as eight at 21-13 en route to its seven-point win. USU hit .214 (14-5-42) in the opening set and San Jose State hit .143 (12-7-35). McArthur led Utah State with nine kills and hit .500 (9-1-16) in the first set.

Utah State had another 4-0 run early on in the second set to pull ahead 10-6 and went on to post the five-point win. McArthur added five more kills here as the Aggies hit .293 (16-4-41) and the Spartans hit .220 (15-6-41).

Utah State began the third set on an 8-1 run and was never threatened as it coasted to the 25-12 victory. USU hit .417 (13-3-24) in the final set and held SJSU to a .040 (8-7-25) hitting percentage.

Utah State finished the match with a season-high .290 (43-12-107) hitting percentage and San Jose State hit .149 (35-20-101). USU also had four more service aces (5-1) and one more team block (4.5-3.5) in the match, while SJSU recorded one more dig (41-40) to go along with two more service errors (4-2).

Utah State will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when it hosts No. 11 Hawai'i as part of USU's Homecoming activities at 2 p.m.
