LOGAN, Utah - For the first time since 2011, the Utah State soccer team has lost two-straight matches after losing a heartbreaking, 1-0, battle with Weber State on Sunday at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.
USU vs. WSU Box Score
With the defeat, Utah State falls to 4-3-2 this season, while Weber State improves to 4-2-2. The loss to the Wildcats snapped a four-match winning streak by USU against Weber State. It was also the sixth-straight match in the series that ended with a one-goal deficit. USU's last loss to WSU came in 2005 when the Wildcats captured a 1-0 win in Ogden. The Aggies have now gone winless in their last four matches with an 0-3-1 record.
"We were in the attacking third a lot, but I'm not sure we generated great opportunities. We had some good crosses come across that nobody got on the end of. We had zero shots on goal. I'm not sure we created enough opportunities. While it may have looked good because we were in the attacking half, we didn't do much with our possession or with our opportunities once we got there. I don't think we had very many shots within the 18-yard box and those are the shots that have the best percentage of going in. We didn't do a good enough job with that today," USU head coach Heather Cairns said.
Neither team had too many offensive opportunities in the first half. Aggie sophomore goalkeeper Jeannie Woller made four first half saves, while the Wildcats' keeper Danielle McKay did not make a save in the first 45 minutes.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Weber State scored the only goal of the match. The Wildcats' Stacy Bair took a deflection and found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
After the goal, Utah State took control with more offensive chances, but were never able to score. In the 54th minute, junior forward Lauren Roundy scored, but the Aggies were called for offsides, waving off the goal. Despite the control, the Aggies had only two shots in the half to match the Wildcats.
Utah State now begins its first season in the Mountain West with a pair of matches in the Silver State. The Aggies open MW action at former Western Athletic Conference rival, Nevada, on Friday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. (MT). USU concludes the road trip against UNLV on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. (MT).
