Utah State soccer recorded its third-straight shutout to stop San José State, 1-0, Friday afternoon, in one of five Homecoming weekend events.

The Aggies are now on a three-match win streak, improving to a 7-4-2 overall record, with a 3-1-1 Mountain West ledger. With the loss, San José State falls to 3-7-6 on the season and 0-4-1 in league play. Utah State now has six shutouts this season, leading the Mountain West.

"We knew San José state was going to be hard-working and that they would battle. They have a great goalkeeper and a great energy about them," said USU head coach Heather Cairns. "We knew they would make the match tough on us and they certainly did that."

Senior midfielder Maris Hamblin scored her first goal of the season and the third of her career in the 43rd minute of the match. Her sister, freshman forward Wesley Hamblin, had her third assist in as many matches, crossing the ball to the center of the box, providing the perfect setup for a goal.

"I thought the finish was fantastic. Those two combining ended up being a sophisticated way to break San José State down. Wesley and Maris have this weird chemistry. In practice, it's just the Hamblin Show when we have them on the same team. They can find each other in places that normal teammates can't," Cairns said. "That's a fun thing to have on the field. They battle hard and love each other hard."

The match started out with San José State controlling the ball and the field, opening in a formation unfamiliar to the Aggies. Once USU was able to adjust to SJSU's style, play and possession both balanced out.

There were 28 fouls between the two teams, a season-high in any of the matches Utah State has played in. The Spartans played a feisty match, totalling 17 fouls, while the Aggies had 11. The Aggies out-shot the Spartans, 11-9. USU had two shots on goal, while SJSU had three.

Junior Jeannie Woller represented the Aggies in the net Friday. She added three saves off San José shots, contributing to her season total of 41. Woller has allowed just 13 goals in the Aggies' 13 matches.

"Those three points for the win are really critical in the conference standings right now," Cairns said. "No one has qualified for the conference tournament yet, so we're all trying to accumulate the points to be one of the last six standing."

Utah State is back at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field on Sunday, Oct. 12, wrapping up a four-match homestand. The Aggies host Fresno State at Noon.
