Oct. 24, 2014 LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's basketball fans were divided into two factions on Friday night as the team showcased its wares at the annual Blue/White Scrimmage in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Arena. In the end, it was the white team's fans that were celebrating the victory, 33-24, in an abbreviated game where the team played a pair of 10-minute halves.
Head coach Stew Morrill shuffled the teams between the first and second halves, giving the close to 2,500 fans in attendance different looks as to what they will see in one of the most inexperienced teams in the nation. The 2014-15 Utah State roster includes only four returners from last year, two redshirts from the 2011-12 season and 11 junior transfers and freshmen.
"I think we looked really ragged and had lots of game slippage," Morrill said at the end of the night. "We all understand we have a long way to go, but that's why in athletics they talk about experience - the faster they get that experience, the better we'll be. We've got a great group of guys and I'm confident that we'll get better."
Junior transfer Lew Evans was the only Aggie in double figures as he split time between the blue and white teams to total 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the charity stripe. The Salt Lake City native was also among the leaders in rebounds, pulling down four defensive boards in addition to one assist and a steal.
Sophomore Jalen Moore came out of the gates hot and was 3-for-3 behind the 3-point line in a manner of minutes. However, his shooting cooled as the game continued and the nine points rounded out his total for the night. Despite the scoring drop, the Sky View High School product contributed in other ways as he led the team with five rebounds and tied for the team lead with two assists and one block.
Julion Pearre was next on the scoring list with seven and was followed by David Collette, JoJo McGlaston and Chris Smith with six apiece. Viko Noma'aea and Sam Orchard were next with three points, Trace Cureton, Konner Frey and Elston Jones chipped in two and Sean Harris rounded out the scoring with one. McGlaston added a pair of steals to lead the team in that category and also tallied a pair of assists to tie Moore for the team lead in dimes.
As a team, Utah State shot 40 percent (22-58) from the field, including 6-of-22 from 3-point range. The Aggies finished 7-of-11 from the free throw line.
USU will open its 2014-15 season with a pair of exhibition games against Texas A&M-International on Oct. 31 and against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Nov. 7 with both contests slated for 7 p.m. Those games will lead up to the season and home opener against Weber State on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
