LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's volleyball suffered a 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 defeat to UNLV on Wednesday night, falling in the straight sets at home for the first time since Sept. 17. The loss drops the Aggies to 12-15 on the year and even in the Mountain West with an 8-8 record. The Rebels improved to 25-6 and 13-3 in the MW, setting new single-season records in regular season and conference wins.
Utah State opened the match strong, scoring back-to-back points on a kill by sophomore outside Kaylie Kamalu and a UNLV error. The Aggies only surrendered the lead at 5-4, but came right back with a four-point run, taking an 8-5 lead on another UNLV error. USU continued to lead until a four-point Rebel run broke a 16-16 tie and gave the visitors a 20-16 lead. UNLV had its first set point at 24-19, but the Aggies scored three straight, highlighted by a pair of Kamalu kills to stay in the match. However, a final kill by the Rebels gave them the set, 25-22.
Both sides opened the second set with matching three-point runs, culminating in a 4-4 tie early in the frame. UNLV broke the deadlock with a five-point run, taking a 9-4 lead and never looked back. Utah State came as close as two on multiple occasions, but were unable to get any closer. The Rebels finished the set hitting a match-high .324 (16-5-34) to Utah State's .026 (9-8-38) en route to the 25-22 finish.
Utah State's hitting funk continued in the third set as the Aggies hit a match-low .023 (8-7-44) and trailed the Rebels from start-to-finish. UNLV closed out the set with three straight points to take the match 25-14.
Senior middle Kaitlyn VanHoff was the only attacker in double figures for the Aggies, recording 10 kills and hitting .400 (10-2-20). VanHoff also led the team with five blocks as both teams tied with 6.0 total blocks apiece. Utah State finished the match hitting .100 (33-20-130) to UNLV's .284 (46-13-116).
The Rebels were led by Ceannia Kincade and Bree Hammel with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, with the duo hitting .407 (13-2-27) and .429 (11-2-21). UNLV libero Allison Davies led both teams with 19 digs with sophomore Hannah Gleason pacing the Aggies with 14. USU senior Ashlan Rogers-Court led both teams with three services aces on the night.
Utah State will close out its 2014 road schedule at San Diego State on Saturday at 7 p.m. That match will be followed by the home finale on Tuesday night against Boise State on Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center at 7 p.m.
