LOOKING AT UTAH STATE

Utah State opened the season with three straight come-from-behind victories before suffering back-to-back losses at Mississippi State (71-63) and at UC Davis (77-70). USU trailed at the half in each of its victories and has led at the break in each of its two defeats.

The Aggies have been led offensively by sophomore wing Jalen Moore with 14.6 points per game and a team-best 6.2 rebounds per game. Moore has scored in double figures in four of Utah State's five games this season, leading the Aggies with 15 against Santa Clara and 17 at UC Davis. He is followed by redshirt freshman forward David Collette with 12.2 points per game. Collette led the Aggies in scoring in the first and second games of the season with 22 and 20, but has cooled off slightly, scoring less than 10 points per game over the last three.

Junior guards Darius Perkins and Chris Smith are also averaging in double figures, turning in 11.2 and 10.8 points per game, respectively. The victories have come against Long Beach State (95-90), Arkansas Little-Rock (91-62), Southern Virginia (101-48), Chaminade (121-85) and Eastern Kentucky (90-76). The game in Logan will mark BYU's first official road game of the 2014-15 season.

BYU is shooting 50.4 percent (232-of-460) from the floor this year, including a 43.4 percent (75-of-173) clip from behind the 3-point line. Senior guard Tyler Haws leads the team in scoring with 22.1 points per game and is joined in double digits by junior guard Chase Fischer (16.3 ppg), senior guard Anson Winder (14.3 ppg) and junior guard Kyle Collinsworth (11.0 ppg). Head coach Dave Rose is 232-78 all-time at BYU and in his 10th season at the helm in Provo.

PRESEASON POLL

Utah State men's basketball team has been selected 10th in the 2014-15 Mountain West Preseason Media Poll.

Nevada (126) and Air Force (102) were picked ahead of the Aggies (98) in eighth and ninth and San José State rounded out the poll in 11th with 41 points.

CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN WEST

Utah State leads the Mountain West in defensive 3-point field goal percentage (.260) and is in the top five of several other statistics among conference schools. The Aggies are 5th in defensive field goal percentage (.395), 5th in 3-point field goal percentage (.363), 4th in assists (13.0 per game), 5th in steals (5.6 per game), 2nd in turnover margin (+2.20), 3rd in assist/turnover ratio (1.4) and 4th in 3-point field goals made (7.4 per game).

LAST TIME OUT

Utah State men's basketball had a three-point lead with 3.8 seconds remaining in regulation at UC Davis on Wednesday night, but a last-second, 25-foot jumper by Davis' Tyler Les sent the game into overtime. The shot seemed to take the wind out of USU's sails as UC Davis opened the extra period on a 9-0 run and went on to take the 77-70 victory.

The loss is the second straight for Utah State and drops USU to 3-2 on the season while UC Davis moved to 4-0 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

Utah State trailed most of the second half after UC Davis opened the final 20 minutes on a 15-2 run to take an 11-point lead, 42-31, with 15:34 showing on the clock. The opening run was countered by a 14-4 run by Utah State over the next five minutes that was started by a jumper by senior forward Sean Harris and ended by a jumper by redshirt freshman David Collette. The surge cut the UCD lead to just one, 46-45, with 10:06 left to play.

UC Davis clung to the narrow advantage until back-to-back 3-point shots by sophomore guard JoJo McGlaston and junior guard Darius Perkins tied the game at 59-59 with 4:15 to play. Another layup by McGlaston with under one minute to play gave USU its first lead of the second half, 62-61 with 58 seconds on the clock. The margin grew to three, 64-61, when sophomore wing Jalen Moore tipped in an offensive rebound with five seconds left in the game.

UC Davis brought the ball up the court and called a timeout with 3.8 seconds on the clock. UCD came out of the break and tossed the ball to Les on the inbound pass and the son of the head coach showed why he is regarded as a 3-point specialist, making a contested 25-foot jump shot at the buzzer.

The shot seemed to pull all the momentum to the side of UC Davis as UCD scored the first nine points during overtime and coasted to the 77-70 win.

The teams opened the game much like a 3-point shoot out as Utah State hit its first three from deep as Collette, junior guard Chris Smith and Perkins each hit the long-range shots. The start gave USU the 9-3 lead as Davis senior forward Josh Ritchart also hit a 3-point shot for the home side's first points of the game.

UC Davis came back to tie the game at 12-12 as the teams battled through two more ties and six lead changes as the half continued. The fifth 3-point basket by Utah State and second by Perkins in the half gave USU the 29-27 lead going into the break, marking the second consecutive game the Aggies led going into halftime. However the half time lead was also the second time this season that Utah State has suffered defeat after leading at the intermission.

Moore led Utah State in scoring for the second time this season putting in 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor and a team-best 4-for-5 shooting from the free throw line. Perkins and Smith followed with 13 points apiece and McGlaston rounded out the double-digit scorers with a career-high 11 points. As a team, Utah State shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) on the night, including 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from deep, and added a 70-percent (7-of-10) clip from the free throw line.

UC Davis was led by junior forward Josh Fox with a career-high 23 points, the most points scored by an individual against Utah State this season. He was followed by Ritchart with 14, junior forward J.T. Adenrele with 12 and senior guard Corey Hawkins, who had been averaging more than 20 per game, with 10. UCD finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from behind the 3-point line and 87.5 percent (14-of-16) from the free throw line.

Utah State had one of its better rebounding nights, finishing minus-4 in rebounding margin as UC Davis collected 40 to USU's 36. Freshman forward Elston Jones pulled down a career-high nine rebounds during the contest in a career-high 27 minutes.

60 IS A LUCKY NUMBER

Jalen Moore NO. 17 ON SI'S PROJECTED LIST OF BREAKOUT PLAYERS IN 2014-15

Sophomore wing Jalen Moore has been picked No. 17 on Sports Illustrated's projected list of breakout players in 2014-15 as released in an article on Oct. 15. Said SI.com "Moore is the Aggies' only returning rotation player -- and thus it's hard to envision a scenario in which he doesn't become an important part of the offense".

LOSING THE BATTLE OF THE BOARDS

Utah State is currently minus-9.0 in rebounding, as opponents have averaged 40.8 boards to the Aggies' 31.8. The margin includes a 70-38 differential on the offensive glass.

IN PURSUIT OF 400 USU VICTORIES

Head coach Stew Morrill only needs 13 victories to hit the 400-win benchmark at Utah State, where he is entering his 17th season. Morrill recorded his 600th career victory in a 73-58 win over San José State last season, becoming just the 14th active coach to notch 600 wins in a career.

COUNTING COLLETTE

Forward David Collette's 22 points in the season opener against Weber state are the most points scored by a freshman in the opening game of the season in school history, topping the 19 points Jaycee Carroll scored against Georgia Southern to start his career in 2004. It is also the most points scored by an Aggie newcomer since Brockeith Pane scored 23 points at home against Weber State in his USU debut to start the 2010-11 season.

Former Aggie All-American Jaycee Carroll holds the single-game freshman record, scoring 28 points against UC Santa Barbara, Jan. 6, 2005.

POSTING VICTORIES

Utah State has collected all three of its victories this season when the Aggie frontcourt out scores the opposition's frontcourt. USU has also suffered both of its losses when its bigs score less points than the opponents' bigs.

NO THREES FOR YOU

Utah State is one of the best in the nation in defending the 3-point line, holding opponents to just 26 percent from behind the 3-point line. The mark is currently first in the Mountain West and 26th nationally.

I'll BE TAKING THAT

Utah State is currently plus-2.2 in turnover differential, creating 11.6 per game while only committing 9.4. The differential is currently second in the Mountain West.

LOCK DOWN D

Utah State has picked up its victories this season when keeping opponents under 40 percent this season, holding Weber State to 38.8 percent (19-of-49), Illinois State to 32.8 percent (22-of-67) and Santa Clara to 36.4 percent (20-of-55). The success has largely be found in the second half where the Aggies are holding opponents to 34.0 percent (50-of-147) from the floor and have surrendered only eight 3-point field goals.

GOING THE DISTANCE

Utah State's starting five has recorded more than 70 percent of minutes played, more than 85 percent of the team's points and more than 60 percent of the team's total rebounds this season. The starting lineup has been the same each of the first five games - David Collette, Jalen Moore, Chris Smith, JoJo McGlaston and Darius Perkins.

FAVORITES AS THE UNDERDOGS

Utah State has trailed at the half in each of its three victories this season, but came back in the second half in each game to pick up the wins. The Aggies out scored their opponents 117-65 and shot 53.5 percent (38-of-71), 43.4 percent (10-of-23) from three and 67.4 percent (31-of-46) from the free throw line over the final 20 minutes. The numbers extend to the defensive side of the ball where USU held opponents to 26.1 percent (23-of-88) from the floor, 12.5 percent (3-of-24) from deep and 51.6 percent (16-of-31) from the charity stripe.

The games also included double-digit deficits for the Aggies, trailing Weber State by 18, Illinois State by 12 and Santa Clara by 15 before coming back for the victory in each game.

UNEASY WITH PROSPERITY

On the flip side, Utah State is 0-2 this season when leading at the half. USU had halftime leads of 38-34 at Mississippi State and 29-27 at UC Davis before falling in the end in both contests.

ANOTHER OPENING

Utah State has debuted a total of eight players this season. The number represents 75 percent of the players to have suited up for the Aggies this season.

MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK (11/17)

Redshirt freshman forward David Collette was awarded Utah State's first ever Mountain West Player of the Week award on Nov. 17, following his showings in the opening games for the Aggies. Collette averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2.5 blocks and 1.0 assist in 28.0 minutes per game, while shooting 72.0 percent from the field (18-25) and 50.0 percent at the free throw line (3-6).
