Utah State women's basketball's home winning streak came to and end Monday night, when the Aggies fell to in-state rival BYU, 62-58, in a double overtime defensive battle.

Freshman guard Funda Nakkasoglu led the team in scoring with 19 points in her eighth double-digit game of the year. Senior forward Franny Vaaulu had her second double-double of the season, with a season-best 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Elise Nelson was next, just shy of a double-double with 11 boards and eight points. Morgan Bailey led the Cougars with a double-double of her own, with 19 points and 22 rebounds, while Lexi Eaton added 29 points.

This was Utah State's first home loss of the season, as it fell to 3-9 overall. BYU improves to 8-3 with the win. This was the first overtime contest for both teams this season.

From the very first whistle, Monday's game was a battle on both sides of the court. After the fast-paced, high-scoring game at Sacramento State last week, the Aggies had to slow their offense to match the Cougars. BYU was first on the board off a pair of free throws, but that lead wouldn't last long, as the game would end with six lead changes and 10 ties.

In the first half, BYU led by as many as seven points, as Eaton led with 11 points. The final three minutes of the half were scoreless for both teams, sending the Cougars into the break with a 23-18 lead.

The second half opened slowly and was very back-and-forth for both teams. By the mid-point of the half, BYU went on an 8-0 run to find it's largest lead of the night with an 11-point advantage. However, Utah State responded well, finishing the period with an 18-5 run of its own.

With less than two minutes remaining, Nelson took an elbow to the face, warranting a flagrant foul to be called against Eaton. Nelson made both free throws , but the Aggies would go on to miss the front ends of the next three available one-and-one opportunities. While Eaton tied the score at 50 with three seconds to play, Nakkasoglu wasn't able to capitalize on her last-second shot, sending the game to extra time.

The first overtime period was an uneventful one, as each team scored just once. Bailey went to the paint with a successful layup in the first minute of play, but it wasn't until the final 30 seconds that freshman center Hannah Hutchins made a shot for the Aggies.

The second overtime was more productive on both ends, but BYU was able to just edge USU. The teams traded buckets for the majority of the period, with the last Aggie points coming off a layup from Vaaulu in the final minute. With nine seconds to go, Eaton made two free throws, solidifying the win for the Cougars.

Utah State out-rebounded the Cougars, snagging a season-high 54 to BYU's 50. The Aggies also recorded a season-best eight blocks on the night. Vaaulu led with four, while Nelson, Hutchins and junior forward Tijana Djukic added to the total.

Overall, Utah State shot 30.6 percent (22-of-72) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free throw line. BYU shot 30.9 percent (21-of-68) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from three and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the free throw line.

After the holiday break, Utah State is set to open Mountain West competition. The Aggies open the conference season at San José State on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. (MT).
