LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State 2, Air Force 0
With continued offensive prowess from the team's leading scorers, Utah State soccer picked up a Mountain West win Friday, defeating Air Force at home, 2-0.
With the win, Utah State improves to 8-7-1 overall this season, with a 3-4-0 Mountain West record. The Falcons fall to 4-10-1 on the year, going 2-4-1 in league action.
The Aggie defense continued to be anchored by senior goalkeeper Jeannie Woller. She tallied seven saves on the day, including stopping several big shots from the Falcons to maintain the shutout. With the win, Woller improves to an individual record of 7-7-1.
Utah State just held on to the shot advantage in Friday's match, out-shooting Air Force, 14-13. The Falcons had more attempts on frame however, with seven to the Aggies' five. It was the lowest fouling game of the year for USU, as each team had just four called on it.
After scoring late in the last several games, Utah State picked up the first goal of the match in the 28th minute, the earliest since scoring in the third minute against Iowa. Junior midfielder Katie Flynn sent a corner kick into the middle, rebounding her own kick. She passed the ball to junior midfielder Jayne Robison who cross it across the line to score her fifth goal of the season.
The Falcons came out strong in the second half, with a new-found drive to go along with a revised formation. Air Force had several opportunities, but were stopped by the hands of Woller. Once the Aggies adjusted to the changes, the defense was able to regain composure and keep the ball on the other end of the field.
Snapping a six-match scoring skid of her own, junior forward Jessica Brooksby scored in the 68th minute, giving the Aggies the extra advantage they had been seeking. As she received the ball, Brooksby battled through the Air Force defense for several seconds before she was finally able to the shot off. The plan went perfectly as the ball found the top left corner of the net, sailing past the keeper's hands.
Despite their best efforts, the Falcons were unable to answer the Aggies, securing the win for USU.
The Aggies will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 18, when the team hosts Colorado College. Action against the Tigers is set for 1 p.m.
