FRESNO, Calif. -
Utah State 3, Fresno State 2
Utah State soccer picked up its first Mountain West win of the season Friday, topping Fresno State, 3-2, on the road.
With the win, Utah State improves to 6-5-1 on the year and 1-2-0 in Mountain West play. The Bulldogs fall to 1-8-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference action.
Senior goalkeeper Jeannie Woller played her seventh-straight full game Friday, where she grabbed five saves for the Aggies. She improves to 5-5-1 on the year.
Fresno State was first on the board Friday, with Franny Johansson scoring off a chip shot following through from a free kick just outside the box in the 31st minute. The Aggies didn't let the Bulldog lead last long, however, as sophomore midfielder Wesley Hamblin scored the equalizing goal just 10 minutes later. USU earned a free kick near the midline, where junior midfielders Shyani Terukina and Lauren Harmon combined to get the ball to Hamblin. From there, she dribbled down the side where she was able to slot the ball past the keeper into the back corner.
The Aggies took their first lead of the night early in the second half, taking advantage of their first penalty kick of the season. Junior midfielder Jayne Robison took the kick for the team, scoring her second goal of the year to put USU ahead.
Unfortunately, that USU lead only lasted a couple of minutes as the Bulldogs responded with a PK of their own. With a foul and a yellow card issued on sophomore defender Danielle Nowers in the box, Myra Delgadillo evened the score at two.
With six minutes to go, Robison struck again to give the Aggies the advantage. On a cross from Hamblin, Robison shot from the top of the box, sailing the ball into the top left corner of the net. This was just the second win for the Aggies this season when allowing the opponent to score first.
Utah State will continue the California trip on Sunday, Oct. 4, when they take on San José State. The Aggies and Spartans will battle at 2 p.m. (MT).
