Oct. 26, 2015 LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's track & field program has announced its schedule for the 2016 indoor season.
The Aggies will compete in six regular season meets before the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 25-27 in Albuquerque, N.M. Utah State will then compete in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
"It is a challenging schedule, but to get better you have to be challenged on a week in and week out basis," said veteran Utah State head coach Gregg Gensel. "As long as we are going places where the athletes will get challenged and be able to compete against people both of their caliber and better, we'll become a better team."
The Aggies open the season at the Boise State-hosted Ed Jacoby Invitational on Jan. 15-16 in Nampa, Idaho. Utah State will compete against Montana State, Montana and Idaho State the following weekend in Bozeman, Mont.
Utah State will then head to the Land of Enchantment, where the Aggies will compete in the New Mexico Team Challenge on Jan. 30 in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Aggies will open the month of February by returning to the Gem State for the Boise State-hosted Jacksons/NB Indoor Invitational on Feb. 5-6.
Utah State will send student-athletes to two different meets the following weekend, which will conclude the regular season. One group of Aggies will compete at the Washington-hosted Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., while another group will compete at a meet hosted by New Mexico.
Following a weekend off, the Aggies will compete in the MW Indoor Track & Field Championships, and select athletes will head to the NCAA Indoor Championships with the necessary qualifying marks.
"The indoor schedule not only gives us a variety of places for our teams to go, but it also gives us great competition to allow our athletes to excel in their individual events," Gensel said.
Utah State's women placed sixth with 45 points at last year's MW Indoor Championships, while the men took fourth with 111 points. The Aggies sent two athletes to the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships as both Chari Hawkins (pentathlon) and Nic Bowens (200-meter dash) garnered second-team All-American honors following their respective performances.
