Senior Guard Chris Smith Earns Several Weekly Awards

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State senior guard Chris Smith was named the Global Sports Hoops Showcase MVP last week and now has three more individual accolades under his belt as he was named the Mountain West, America First Credit Union and College Sports Madness Mountain West Player of the Week, as announced on Monday by the various organizations.

Smith averaged 18.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.0 blocks per game over the three-day tournament, leading the Aggies in scoring, rebounding and assists in each of the first two games. In the opening contest against UT Rio Grande Valley, Smith scored 18 points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out a career-high six assists and recorded two blocks to lead the Aggies in all four categories.

Smith then recorded his second double-double of the season in the second game of the tournament, logging a season-high 22 points and tallying 10 rebounds, while matching his career high with six assists. In the tournament finale, Smith scored 15 points and finished second on the team with eight rebounds while adding two assists. For the week, Smith shot 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the floor, 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from behind the 3-point line and 80.0 percent (12-of-15) from the free throw line.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior forward Julianne Anchling (Faverges de la Tour, France) led Utah State to a 1-2 non-conference record last week in a 63-46 win against Tennessee State and an 80-76 loss to Montana in the Lady Griz Classic, as well as a 64-61 home loss to Utah. Against the Tigers, she scored two points on 1-of-5 (.200) shooting from the floor while adding three rebounds, one block and one assist. Against the Grizzlies, Anchling was the leading scorer for the Aggies with a career-best 14 points, shooting 5-of-12 (.833) from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 (1.000) from behind the arc, while adding five rebounds. Against the Utes, Anchling tallied 12 points, shooting 5-of-8 (.625) from the field and 2-of-4 (.500) from the 3-point line and was the leading rebounder with six boards, while adding one block and one steal. Anchling has had double-digit scoring in four of her last five games, having had just one in her career before this month. Overall, Anchling shot 11-of-25 (.440) from the field and 9-of-11 (.818) from the 3-point line, while adding 14 rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist.

FOOTBALL - Senior nose guard David Moala (Inglewood, Calif.) tied his career high with a team-best eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks, in Utah State's 23-21 loss to Akron in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl last week. Moala also had one pass breakup against the Zips.
