Iowa 2, Utah State 1

Despite an early goal and a lead for the majority of the match, Utah State soccer dropped the first of two weekend road matches Friday, falling to Iowa in Missoula, Mont.

With the loss, Utah State falls to 3-2-0 on the year, while Iowa remains undefeated at 4-0-0. Senior goalkeeper Jeannie Woller played the entire match for the Aggies, falling to 2-2-0 in the net. The Aggies allowed a season-high 21 shots from the opponent, six of which resulted in saves for Woller.

The Aggies struck early in Friday's action as junior midfielder Katie Flynn put the team on the board with her first goal of the season in just the third minute of action. Assisted by fellow junior midfielder Lauren Harmon, Flynn received the ball on the left side of the goal, shooting from 15 yards out to the far back corner of the net.

Utah State held onto that lead for the remainder of the first half, but after 15 minutes of play in the second half, the Hawkeyes retaliated quickly. The Iowa offense drew a foul from the Aggies, inside the penalty box, the first foul of its kind for USU this season. Iowa's leading scorer, junior forward Bri Toole, lined up for the penalty kick, finding the back of the net to even the score.

Just over a minute later, the Hawkeyes took the lead when Toole redirected a pass to senior forward Brook Backes who got the ball past the Aggie defense into the goal. USU had one last opportunity in the 87th minute of play, as junior forward Jessica Brooksby took the final corner kick of the day. The ball curved toward the goal, but was tripped up the Iowa defense.

The Aggies continue their weekend roadswing in Spokane, Wash. on Sunday, Sept. 6. Utah State and Gonzaga are set to play at 1 p.m. (MT).
