ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Utah State men's basketball dropped a 77-59 decision at New Mexico on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Aggies to 9-6 on the year and 1-3 in the Mountain West, while New Mexico moved to 10-6 and 3-0 in league play.
Utah State was strong on the glass during the contest, especially on the offensive end, collecting a season-high 17 offensive rebounds and turning them into a season-high 21 second-chance points.
Junior wing Jalen Moore led the Aggies with 17 points, marking the 14th consecutive conference game that he has scored in double figures. He was followed by Chris Smith with 14 points, his 14th double-digit scoring game this season.
The teams were only separated by five points, 17-12, early in the first half, but the Lobos went on a 14-0 run over the span of nine minutes and stretched the margin to 31-12. The difference grew to 25 going into the break with New Mexico taking a 43-18 lead into the half.
The Aggies came out stronger in the second half, outscoring the Lobos 41-34 and shooting 42.1 percent (16-of-38) from the floor to New Mexico's 35.7 percent (10-of-28). Sophomore guard Julion Pearre scored all of his nine points in the final 20 minutes as the Aggies fell 77-59 at the final whistle.
Overall, Utah State shot 34.4 percent (23-of-67) from the floor, including 6-of-29 from behind the 3-point line, while shooting 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the free throw line. Utah State's 29 attempts from long range marked a season high for the Aggies. USU also recorded a season-high 10 steals on the night, headlined by a career-high four by redshirt senior forward Grayson Moore.
New Mexico finished the game 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from behind the 3-point line and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line. UNM junior forward Tim Williams led all scorers with 21 points and he was followed by sophomore guard Elijah Brown with 18 and sophomore guard Cullen Neal with 12.
Utah State will return to the court on Tuesday night, hosting Air Force in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on KVNU or watch the game on ROOT Sports.
