LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's volleyball lost a 3-0 decision to Wyoming on Saturday night in a match that was decided by the narrowest of margins. With the defeat, USU is now 6-9 on the year and 1-3 in the Mountain West, while the Cowgirls moved to 10-6 overall and 3-0 in league play.
The Aggie block was a highlight for the home side during the night as sophomore middle Lauren O'Brien led the way with six block assists, as part of 10.0 blocks for USU during the match. The performance marked the third time in the last four matches that Utah State has recorded double-digit blocks.
Utah State attacking errors kept Wyoming in the match throughout the competition as the Aggies committed 27. Utah State finished the match hitting .096 (40-27-136) to the Cowgirls' .210 (48-22-124), but were within two points of Wyoming in all but the second set.
"It was just too many hitting errors tonight," head coach Grayson DuBose said after the match. "Having 27 it just too many and is really a whole game of hitting errors. It would have been a completely different match if we don't have 27 and stay where we've been all season and manage those a little bit better."
Utah State played from behind in the first set, coming back and tying the match twice at 12-12 and 23-23, on Wyoming attacking errors. USU attacking errors then proved to be the difference at the end of the game as back-to-back miscues led to a 25-23 victory for the Cowgirls.
Utah State countered a 2-0 Wyoming lead in the second set with a 4-1 run, capped by a kill by junior right side Kayla DeCoursey to take its first lead of the match, 4-3. The Cowgirls came back with a three-point run and then led by as many as seven, 17-10, leading to a Utah State timeout. The Aggies began to chip away at the Wyoming advantage and came to within three, 23-20, following a block by DeCoursey and O'Brien. The Cowgirls called a timeout and came out of the break with back-to-back kills and took the set, 25-20.
The teams went back and forth in the third set, playing through 20 ties and 11 lead changes. Down the stretch, Utah State had four set points and Wyoming had an equal number of match points in a game that ultimately finished 32-30 in favor of the Cowgirls. Utah State had its largest lead of the night at 12-8, building the advantage behind kills by O'Brien and junior outside Lauren Anderson and a service ace by senior setter Erica Moscoso. Wyoming came back to tie the match at 16-16 and the teams then jostled back and forth through ties over the next several rallies, leading up to a 21-21 deadlock.
Utah State broke the tie with a kill by DeCoursey and a Wyoming error, taking a 23-21 lead and marking the only time before the conclusion of the match that either team would have more than a one-point advantage down the stretch. The Aggies had set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but each time a Cowgirl kill tied the match up again. USU fought off Wyoming match points at 26-25 and 27-26 behind a kill by Anderson and a Cowgirl attacking error. A third set point for Utah State at 28-27 was taken away by another Wyoming kill and the Cowgirls squandered a 29-28 match point after a service error.
The USU duo of O'Brien and DeCoursey gave the Aggies their 10th block of the game and a 30-29 lead, but Wyoming countered with three straight points to take the match, 32-30.
Utah State's offense was led individually by Anderson with 13 kills, hitting a team-best .219 (13-6-32). Senior libero Hannah Gleason provided more highlights for the Aggie defense, recording 11 digs and running a double-digit dig streak to six consecutive matches.
USU will continue Mountain West play on the road next week, traveling to Air Force and Boise State on Thursday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 8, respectively.
