Utah State soccer opened its weekend of Mountain West road action in a 2-0 loss at New Mexico Friday.
On the night, New Mexico out-shot the Aggies, 9-8. Of Utah State's eight shots, just one fell on-target. Sophomore goalkeeper Grace McGuire played the full match for the Aggies, tallying three saves.
With the loss, Utah State falls to 9-6-0 overall and 5-2-0 in Mountain West action. New Mexico improves to 7-6-2 on the year and 3-4-0 in conference action.
New Mexico was the first to strike Friday night, scoring in the 14th minute of play. Emily Chavez dribbled up the field, finding holes in the Aggie defense. She got the ball to Claire Lynch, the Lobos' leading scorer on the year, who shot from the top of the box to put New Mexico on the board.
The Aggies were only able to get one shot off in the first half, taken by senior midfielder Jayne Robison-Merrill in the 38th minute. The Lobos took six shots through the first 45 minutes, including three on goal, taking their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Utah State had more offensive opportunities through the second half, but was unable to capitalize on the chances. New Mexico went on to extend its lead in the 57th minute. Jennifer Munoz received a pass from Olivia Ferrier, getting a close shot from the right side of the net. The final minute of play was all in the Aggies' attacking third, with a shot from sophomore midfielder Jordyn Chung-Hoon and a USU corner kick.
The Aggies' weekend roadtrip continues on Sunday, Oct. 16, when Utah State will play at San Diego State. The Aggies and Aztecs will battle at 2 p.m. (MT).
