Post-Game Quotes
vs. Fresno State
Oct. 22, 2016
UTAH STATE HEAD COACH Matt Wells: "I'm just happy for our guys. Any win is a good win, I've always said that. It's hard to win games in college football, I'm just happy for our guys. There are a lot of doubters out there, whether its media or people around the program. I thought our guys did a tremendous job in the last two weeks of focusing on what's most important. That's going to class, working hard and being a great teammate. They're sticking together as a team and I'm very proud of them for doing that. There are a lot of people pulling at them from different directions and a lot of negativity out there. They continue to fight and that gives me hope. There's talent in that locker room, and they're very motivated.
"I was really happy with how we came out and played in the third quarter. That's been a big emphasis for us. Winning the second half was huge and was the difference in the ballgame. That's something that we stressed and talked about. We did a lot of work toward that and it was good to see that come to fruition. My hat's off to our guys. Fresno State plays hard and is a better team than what is indicated by their record. They play very hard for coach DeRuyter and his staff. I'm happy for our guys for getting out of here with the win and now we get to keep going."
On the feeling in the locker room:
"They're happy. They understand getting back to our winning ways, so that's a happy locker room right now. There's a lot of frustration on their part for the past games because close doesn't count."
On moving on from here:
"I don't know that we're out of the conference championship picture, I've seen crazier things happen. We're not talking about it, we're talking one game at a time. Our next challenge is San Diego State back here on Friday night. It's a really good team coming in here for another national television game. That's all we're worried about."
UTAH STATE JUNIOR QUARTERBACK Kent Myers:
"I think we played well overall. We kind of slowed down a bit in the second quarter, but we accomplished our main goal, which was to come out and score some points and really win the second half. We did some new stuff at practice in halftime situations and in coming back after a long break, and I think that helped."
On the blocked punt and resulting touchdown:
"That was big for us. This week we talked about feeding off each other's juice. He got the block and then the touchdown, then we came right back out and scored on the next drive as well."
On the balance of the running and throwing in tonight's game:
"We're just taking what the defense gives us. We had a good gameplan and we came in and executed. It doesn't matter who we play, it's about us executing. We did that in the second half, especially."
UTAH STATE SENIOR CORNERBACK Jentz Painter:
"When we get things going, the team gets going. Making a play on special teams is always huge, especially in a game where you're going back-and-forth on offense and defense. When you can make a play on special teams, it really rejuvenates the team and the crowd. Our special teams played hard tonight and that's what special teams is. It's about playing hard and working your tail off. I thought the defense as a whole made some plays that were needed in crucial times."
On being called one of the best special teams players in USU history:
"I look at it as going down there and being able to be with my boys out there, playing as a unified team. That's why I love football. You get to be with people that you can have close relationships with. I just try and go out there and have fun. That's where it's at. Getting a compliment like that is huge. The Aggies mean a lot to me and I try to help out where I can."
FRESNO STATE HEAD COACH TIM DERUYTER:
"We didn't play very well in the second half. We have to tackle better, we let the quarterback get away a couple of times and we had busted coverage. They made some plays, but going into the fourth quarter we thought that we were going to have a close football game. We didn't make plays and they did, so give Utah State the credit."
