LAS VEGAS, Nev. -
UNLV 1, Utah State 0 (OT)
Utah State soccer opened the final week of regular season competition Sunday, falling to UNLV on the road in a 1-0 overtime defeat.
On the day, UNLV out-shot the Aggies, 25-14, including a 7-4 on-goal advantage. Sophomore goalkeeper Grace McGuire played the full match Sunday, adding six saves to her season total.
With the loss, the Aggies fall to 10-8-0 on the year, going 6-4-0 in Mountain West action. With the loss, UNLV improves to 14-3-2 overall and 7-1-2 in conference play. This was the Aggies' first loss in overtime action this season, having defeated Gonzaga and Air Force in extra time earlier.
The Aggies and Rebels battled though nearly 99 minutes of scoreless soccer, forcing the match into overtime. Both teams had several chances through the regulation minutes, but neither were able to capitalize. The offenses were led by the two leading scorers in the Mountain West in UNLV's Lily Sender and Utah State senior forward Jessica Brooksby, ranking first and second, respectively. Both took the most shots for their respective team, as Brooksby took three and Sender fired off seven.
Two minutes into the overtime period, Brooksby had the first real opportunity to score. As she shot the ball past the UNLV defense, it hit the inside of the left post, bouncing back out of the net. The Rebels moved the ball back to their attacking third, led by Sender. With a great chance developing, USU freshman defender Mealii Enos executed a perfect slide tackle, kicking the ball out of bounds and ending the drive. Unfortunately, the ball would again find Sender on a cross over the box, where she was able to move past McGuire for the game-winning goal.
The Aggies will close out the regular season this week, traveling to play at Boise State on Friday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m. The team will then wait for seeding information for the Mountain West Tournament. Tournament play will begin
