Oct. 31, 2016 LOGAN, Utah - Fourth-seeded Utah State soccer (11-8-0, 7-4-0 MW) opens competition at the Mountain West Championship Tuesday, Nov. 1, as it plays No. 5 Wyoming (10-7-2, 6-4-1 MW). The Aggies and Cowgirls will meet at 5 p.m. (MT) in the tournament hosted by San Diego State.
The six-team, single-elimination tournament, which runs through Saturday, Nov. 5, will feature all five matches broadcast live and for free on the Mountain West Network. Live stats for each match will also be available on the 2016 MW Women's Soccer Championship Central page. Links to both options will be posted on the Utah State Soccer social media pages and on the USU Athletics website.
Wyoming wrapped up the regular season with a record of 9-7-2, going 5-4-1 in Mountain West meetings. The Cowgirls concluded its season with a 1-0 home win over Wyoming. The guaranteed match for the Aggies, Utah State and Wyoming will play the first match of the tournament in a 5 p.m. (MT) meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
Freshman forward Michaela Stark leads the Cowgirl offense with six goals and one assist this season. As a team, Wyoming has scored 28 goals on the year. Junior Georgia Rowntree has played all but one match in the net this season, allowing 21 goals while tallying 70 saves. Pete Cuadrado is in his fifth season as the head coach at Wyoming, where he has a 46-45-13 record. Cuadrado was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year for the 2014 season.
Wyoming returns its entire starting lineup and 21 total letterwinners from the 2015 squad that posted a 10-6-4 overall record, while going 6-4-1 in league play for a fourth-place finish. Utah State has a slight edge over Wyoming in the all-time series, leading 5-4-2. The series dates back to Utah State's inaugural season in 1996. The Aggies and the Cowgirls played each other in the first weekend of the conference season in Logan this fall, where USU won the match, 3-0.
For the Aggies, senior forward Jessica Brooksby leads the team in scoring with nine goals and nine assists. Sophomore Grace McGuire has spent the majority of time in the net for Utah State, allowing 15 goals while tallying 66 saves.
