LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State 2, San José State 1
Behind two goals from senior forward Jessica Brooksby, Utah State soccer wrapped up its weekend of home competition with a 2-1 win over San José State Sunday.
Overall, Utah State out-shot the Spartans, 16-10, including a 7-2 on-goal advantage. Redshirt sophomore Grace McGuire played the full match in the net for the Aggies, adding one save to her season total.
Both defenses played hard through the match, with total of 27 fouls being called. San José State had 16 fouls called against it, the most of any USU opponent this season. Over the duration of the game, a total of six yellow cards were given out. Three Spartan players were shown on-field cards, while junior forward Wesley Hamblin was given the only Aggie card. Both team benches were also given one card each in the final five minutes of the match.
With the win, Utah State improves to 9-5-0 on the year, including a 5-1-0 Mountain West ledger. San José State falls to 6-4-4 overall and 3-2-1 in league action. Utah State's win also secures the Aggies' first-place spot in the Mountain West standings.
It didn't take long for San José State to score Sunday, as the Spartans got on the board in the sixth minute of action. After fighting through the Aggie defense, an SJSU player punched the ball out of the mix to Yaritza Artista, who got it past McGuire.
With a bit of a spark lit in the team having to play with a deficit, the Aggie offense stepped up its play. Brooksby had two great opportunities, but the shots were blocked by the Spartan defense and the crossbar of the goal. Playing through several defensive calls, senior defender Shyani Terukina drew a foul off San José State in the penalty box. Brooksby lined up to take the team's first penalty kick of the season, evening the score on the shot in the 30th minute. This was Brooksby's first PK goal of her career in regulation play.
The first yellow card of the day came just minutes later, as the chippy defensive play started to increase. As the teams battled, the first half ended in a 1-1 draw. That same feisty action showed through the second half as well, as three more cards would be issued before the next goal was scored.
As the time ran out, the Aggie offense tried to keep possession and was finally able to capitalize on its chances in the 86th minute. Junior defender Rachelle Warner dribbled the ball up into USU's attacking third, where she ran into several Spartan defenders. She was able to get the ball out of the group to Brooksby who scored to give Utah State the 2-1 lead it would keep for the remainder of the match.
The Aggies head back on the road next week as they play at New Mexico and San Diego State. Utah State will take on the Lobos on Friday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a meeting with the Aztecs on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. (MT).
