LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Utah State opened its longest conference road swing of the year with a 3-0 loss at UNLV on Thursday night, moving the Aggies to 11-15 on the year and 6-9 in the Mountain West. UNLV improved to 22-5 and 11-4 with the victory.
Junior outside Lauren Anderson led the Utah State attack with 13 kills, hitting .306 (13-2-36) on the night as Utah State hit .247 (38-15-93) as a team. Junior right side Kayla DeCoursey followed with seven kills and junior outside Rachel Gale with six. Senior setter Erica Moscoso led the Aggies with 32 assists and finished second on the team with six digs.
Senior libero Hannah Gleason led the USU back row with nine digs, while Anderson and sophomore middle Lauren O'Brien led the Aggies with two blocks apiece.
Utah State had an early 7-5 lead in the first set, but UNLV came back with a 6-2 run to take an 11-9 advantage of its own. The Aggies chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the set at 11-11 and the teams then battled through five more ties, culminating in a 22-22 deadlock late in the frame. The Rebels then scored the final three points of the set, taking an early 1-0 lead with the 25-22 finish.
UNLV scored the first two points of the second set and never trailed en route to the 25-17 victory in the game. Utah State bounced back in the third and scored the first two points behind kills by junior middle Carly Lenzen and Gale, but fell behind 8-3 following a five-point run by the Rebels. UNLV maintained at least a four-point lead throughout the frame, until the Aggies came to within three, 17-14, behind a kill and service ace by Gale and a UNLV attacking error. The Rebels answered with back-to-back points and went on to capture the set and match with the 25-20 victory.
On the night, UNLV hit .330 (41-12-88) and was led by Bree Hammel with 11 kills, rounding out her stat line with seven digs, four aces and three blocks.
Utah State will remain on the road Saturday, facing New Mexico at Noon. The road trip will conclude with a match at Fresno State on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. (MT).
