LOGAN, Utah -

Former Utah State football player LaVell Edwards passed away Thursday. He was 86 years old.

Originally from Orem, Utah, Edwards was a terrific lineman and backfield player on the Utah State football team from 1949-51, and earned all-Mountain States Conference honors in 1950 as a linebacker. In all, Edwards was a three-year letterwinner for the Aggies.

“We are saddened by the passing of an Aggie legend in LaVell Edwards,” said USU Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hartwell. “LaVell created a tremendous legacy during his time as a student-athlete at Utah State and that stature only grew throughout his professional career as a football coach.”

Edwards was named to Utah State's All-Century Football team in 1993 and was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame the same year. He was also inducted into the Utah State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Following his collegiate career, Edwards served as Brigham Young's head football coach from 1972-2000.
