Feb. 24, 2016 LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's tennis freshman Romai Ugarte has been tabbed the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played from Feb. 17-23, it was announced Wednesday by the conference office.
Overall, it is the first weekly MW award for Ugarte, who hails from Santiago, Chile. The Aggies are the first team this season to have a pair of teammates win Player of the Week honors, as sophomore Jaime Barajas won the award on Feb. 3.
Ugarte posted a 2-2 record in singles and doubles play last week, helping Utah State to a 1-1 record with a 4-0 loss at No. 10 Texas Tech and a 4-0 win against UTSA. Against the Roadrunners, Ugarte partnered with freshman Luis Lopez for a 7-6 win at the second position to clinch the doubles point, before posting a straight sets win at No. 6 singles (6-3, 6-4) to clinch the win. Against Texas Tech, Ugarte competed with sophomore Andrew Nakajima against the No. 2-ranked doubles tandem in the country and kept the match close until a late service break gave Texas Tech's team the 6-4 win. Ugarte lost his singles match against the Red Raiders, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot.
Utah State is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 28, when it hosts Gonzaga at 1 p.m. (MT) at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
