SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
Utah State 3, San Diego State 0
In just its third shutout of the season, Utah State softball got back in the win column Saturday with a 3-0 victory at San Diego State.
Junior Alleyah Armendariz pitched the full seven innings Saturday night, earning her first-career shutout and improving to 3-5 on the season. She allowed six hits on the night while walking one batter and striking out four. The Aggies had a strong night offensively, led by a perfect 3-for-3 performance, including a home run, from junior first baseman Paxton Provost. Junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring the team's other two runs.
With Saturday's win, Utah State improves to 25-22 overall and 11-9 in Mountain West action. San Diego State falls to 25-20 on the year, with a 7-10 league ledger.
The Aggies got started early, as Clarke led-off the game with a bunt single. She then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the San Diego State catcher. Senior outfielder Noelle Johnson then reached base on a fielder's choice. Johnson was putout trying to get to second, but Clarke was able to cross the plate on a second Aztec error and put the Aggies on the board.
The USU defense remained staunch from the very beginning, as SDSU did not get a runner on base for the first two innings and it wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that the Aztecs were able to record a hit.
Clarke struck again for the Aggies in the top of the third, opening the inning with a triple down the left field line. Senior outfielder Sarah Chow and Johnson followed with back-to-back singles, loading the bases. A sacrifice fly from Armendariz brought Clarke home for her second run of the day.
The Aggies got just one hit in the top of the fourth, but it was a solo shot from Provost, scoring the team's final run of the day. San Diego State's offense came alive through the later innings, as the Aztecs added two hits in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Each runner was left stranded though, as other outs were quickly recorded.
The Aggies and Aztecs will battle for the series win Sunday, May 1, in the third and final game of the weekend. First pitch is set for 1 p.m (MT).
