FULLERTON, Calif. - Utah State soccer opened its weekend roadtrip with a 1-0 win at Cal State Fullerton Friday.

Junior forward Bailee Hammond scored the sole goal in Friday's match, striking in the 77th minute. It was her first goal of the season and the third of her career. She was assisted by senior forward Jessica Brooksby, her second assist of the year.

With the win, Utah State improves to 2-2-0 on the year, while Cal State Fullerton falls to 1-3-0 with the loss.

On the night, the Aggies and Titans finished with an even 13 shots apiece. CSUF had eight shots on goal to Utah State's five. Redshirt sophomore Grace McGuire played the full match in the net for the Aggies, tallying eight saves and earning her second shutout of the season.

The first half finished with an empty scoreboard as neither team was able to capitalize on its opportunities in the first 45 minutes. With three offside calls against them, the Aggies doubled their season total. The Titans had more offensive chances through the first half, taking six shots to USU's four.

The Aggies had several close chances early in the second half, but couldn't quite find the back of the net. Junior midfielder Wesley Hamblin made a long run up the middle, but collided with the Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper. Just minutes later, junior defender Danielle Nowers took a shot that Brooksby rebounded. She followed with a shot of her own, but hit the crossbar squarely. Similarly, the Titans had several good opportunities, but they ended with key saves from McGuire in the net.

In the 77th minute of play, Utah State scored the only goal of the match. Brooksby received the ball just past the midfield line and dribbled it up the field. She crossed to Hammond who fired off the shot. It hit the fingertips of the CSUF keeper, but made it into the left corner of the net. Both teams looked to continue the scoring through the final minutes, but the Aggie defense held the Titans off to earn the shutout.

Utah State will continue its weekend in California with a match at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Noon (MT).The Aggies then return to Logan for a five-game homestand beginning with Gonzaga on Friday, Sept. 9.
