Fighting through rain and cold temperatures, Utah State soccer opened the Mountain West portion of its season with a 3-1 victory over Colorado State, Friday.

Due to the week's rain and unplayable field conditions, Friday's match was moved to the Aggie Legacy Fields on USU's campus.

The Aggies' season leaders continued their strong offensive performances Friday, as the team's goals were scored by senior forward Jessica Brooksby and freshman forward Alecia Robinson. Junior forward Wesley Hamblin also added two assists to her season scoring.

Overall, Utah State out-shot the Rams, 11-9, but Colorado State had the advantage in on-goal shots, 7-6. Redshirt sophomore Grace McGuire was in the net for the Aggies, tallying six saves on the day. This was Utah State's first time winning its conference-opener since joining the Mountain West.

With the win, Utah State improves to 5-4-0 overall and starts with a 1-0-0 Mountain West slate. Colorado State falls to 2-6-1 on the year and 0-1-0 in league play with the loss.

The Aggies were on the board early for the second match in a row, as Brooksby scored in the 10th minute of play. Freshman defender Mealii Enos took a shot, while the ball deflected off the Colorado State keeper to Hamblin. She attempted a shot with the same result as Enos, getting the ball to Brooksby, who found the back of the net. Brooksby maintained her momentum, striking again in the 25th minute. After a CSU foul, she took the Aggies' earned free kick, which went right into the Rams' wall. The ball ended up back at Brooksby's feet, where she was able to volley it past the keeper for her second goal of the day.

The Aggies took their 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Out of the stop, Utah State picked up where it left off, extending the team's lead in the 58th minute. As Hamblin dribbled the ball up the field, the Colorado State keeper left the box in hopes of stopping a shot. With an open net, Hamblin got the ball to Robinson who was able to score her fourth goal of the season.

Colorado State escaped the shutout, scoring just a minute later. After getting the ball into the Utah State box, Amy Eckert was able to gain a bit of control and get a shot off. It hit the crossbar, but then fell into her shoulder to cross the line and score.

The Aggies continue their Homecoming weekend action on Sunday, Sept. 25, when the team hosts Wyoming. The match is set for 1 p.m.
