Utah State Loses 3-2 at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Utah State women's volleyball recorded double-digit blocks for the second consecutive match, but lost 3-2 at San Diego State on Saturday night, squaring the Aggies' Mountain West record at 1-1.

USU hit .195 (52-23-149) during the match and was led by a trio of double-digit attackers in junior outside Lauren Anderson with 14 kills, junior right side Kayla DeCoursey with 13 kills and senior outside Kaylie Kamalu-Smith with 10. Senior setter Erica Moscoso finished the night with a double-double of 41 assists and 10 digs and added career highs of four kills and five blocks.

Senior libero Hannah Gleason led the Aggie back row with 13 digs as Utah State finished with 44 digs as sophomore Lauren O'Brien paced the Aggie block with six.

Utah State fought off three San Diego State set points in the first set, coming back from 24-21 down with four straight points, taking a 25-24 lead. SDSU countered with a two-point run of its own, taking a 26-25 lead, but the Aggies closed out the game with a three-point run behind a pair of Aztec errors and a Kamalu-Smith ace to take the set, 28-26.

The teams battled through eight ties in the second set, including a 15-15 deadlock that was broken by an Anderson kill, giving the Aggies a 16-15 lead. San Diego State then put together a seven-point run to take a 22-16 lead and then carried the momentum through the game en route to a 25-19 win, evening the match at 1-1.

The third set went into extra points, much like the first, as Utah State was able to break from the Aztecs at 19-19 and took the frame 26-24 to go up 2-1. San Diego State jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set and hit a match-high .481 (14-1-27) to the Aggies' -.040 (4-5-25) en route to a 25-7 win to force a fifth set.

Utah State had to fight from behind in the fifth set, but took a late lead, 13-12, following a three-point run. However, San Diego State ended the match with back-to-back blocks and a final attacking error by the Aggies led to the 15-13 final.

SDSU was led during the night by Alexandra Psoma with 18 kills, Indigo Thompson with 58 assists and Devyn Pritchard with 23 digs. Overall, the Aztecs hit .288 (65-23-146) in the win.

Utah State will return to Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center and host its Mountain West home opener against Colorado State on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. The Aggies continue the homestand against Wyoming on Saturday, Oct. 1, with an earlier start time of 6 p.m.
