SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
UCSB 1, Utah State 0
Utah State soccer concluded its weekend roadtrip Sunday, falling 1-0 at UC Santa Barbara.
With the loss, Utah State falls to 2-3-0 on the year, while UC Santa Barbara remains perfect at 5-0-0.
Overall, UCSB out-shot the Aggies, 15-9, though Utah State had a higher on goal percentage with six shots resulting in saves for the Gaucho goalkeeper. In her first-career start, freshman goalkeeper Maggie Richey tallied two saves.
The match started as a defensive battle, as neither team was able to come away with many shots through the first half. The Aggies did not take a shot in the match until the 33rd minute of play, when freshman forward Alecia Robinson gave USU its first attempt. The final minutes of the first half were all in the Gauchos' control as UCSB kept the ball in its attacking third and took five corner kicks in the last five minutes of the half.
Utah State was able to garner a little more possession in the second half, but was still unable to find the back of the net. In the 61st minute of action, UC Santa Barbara scored what would be the sole goal of the match. After a shot deflected back from Richey to the Gauchos, a second attempt put the ball in the goal to put UCSB on the board. The Aggies held on in the final minutes of regulation with several shots and corner kicks, but were held scoreless.
The Aggies now return to Logan for a five-match homestand. Utah State will host Gonzaga on Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m., followed by Sam Houston State on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. The home series will continue over the next two weeks with visits from BYU, Colorado State and Wyoming.
