With an exciting finish on both sides of the field, Utah State soccer dropped its weekend finale to New Mexico, 2-1, Sunday.

With the loss, Utah State falls to 6-5-1 on the season, including a 1-3-0 Mountain West record. New Mexico moves to 8-4-0 overall and 3-1-0 in league play with the win.

Utah State dominated possession early in the match, working around the New Mexico defense and keeping the ball on the Aggie side of the field. Things heated up toward the halftime break, but Utah State ended the half with six shots to the Lobos' four.

The tone shifted a bit in the second half, as New Mexico managed a bit more time of possession and found the holes in Utah State's gameplan. The Lobos struck first, scoring in the 81st minute of play. With possession in the box, the ball bounced around touching several players on both teams. Alexa Kirton then got a toe on the ball, sending it past Cobb from the top of the penalty box.

The dramatics heated up in the final minute of the match. The Aggies re-gained control of the ball, moving back to their attacking third. The New Mexico goalkeeper came out of the net, moving up in the box on the USU offense. With the empty net, senior forward Bailee Hammond fought off another defender and was able to score with 45 seconds left on the clock. Looking to kick-off and head to overtime, the Lobos instead scored the go-ahead goal. On the whistle, a long pass down-field found Claire Lynch right at the goal line, where she picked the ball in past Aggie goalkeeper Sara Cobb. With 28 seconds left, the Aggies maintained possession but could not capitalize, giving the Lobos the win.

Overall, New Mexico had the slight shot advantage on the Aggies, 12-11, earning six shots on goal to Utah State's five. Cobb played the full match in the net, tallying four saves.

Utah State remains at home for next weekend's competitions, hosting Colorado College on Friday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m., and Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.
