LOGAN, Utah - Utah State senior cornerback Jalen Davis has been named a semifinalist for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, it was announced Monday by Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
Davis is one of 13 semifinalists and the only player from either the Mountain West or Beehive State to land on the list. The award recognizes the top defensive back in college football.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound native of La Mesa, Calif., is having a senior season to remember as he has already been named a mid-season All-American by The Associated Press, ESPN, CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated.
Davis is the only Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player with three defensive touchdowns on the season as he returned two interceptions for touchdowns against BYU and one against Idaho State. He is also tied for first in the nation with his five interceptions this season, and ranks 11th nationally with his 1.6 passes defended per game.
In the Aggies' 40-24 win over BYU on Sept. 29, Davis had a career-high three interceptions, which are the second-most in a single-game in school history and tied for the most in a single-game in Mountain West history, while the two pick-sixes are a school record.
Following the BYU game, Davis was named the CBSSports.com National Player of the Week, the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Player of the Week and the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week.
Davis holds the school record with 29 pass breakups and ranks fourth all-time with his 11 career interceptions.
On the season, Davis has recorded 21 tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss. He leads the Aggies with six pass breakups and shares the team lead with 3.0 sacks.
The 2017 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award semifinalists represent seven conferences: Big Ten (3), SEC (3), ACC (3), Pac-12 (1), Big 12 (1), MW (1) and AAC (1).
Utah State (4-4, 2-2 MW), fresh off a 52-28 victory at UNLV last weekend, returns to the friendly confines of Maverik Stadium this weekend to host Boise State (5-2, 3-0) on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on the CBS Sports Network (Comcast Ch. 269/753HD, Dish Network Ch. 158, DirecTV Ch. 221) with Carter Blackburn (play-by-play), Aaron Taylor (analyst) and Jenny Dell (reporter) on the call.
