BOISE, Idaho -
Boise State 4, Utah State 2
Utah State softball wrapped up its weekend at Boise State in a 4-2 loss to the Broncos, Sunday afternoon.
Senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo led Utah State offensively Sunday, as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and a triple. Senior first baseman Paxton Provost was tops defensively, recording nine putouts. Freshman Kellie White pitched the complete game for the Aggies, where she struck out five batters and did not walk any batters.
"Today is disappointing because we played hard, but just came up short. Championships are won on Sunday, and this is the second opportunity we've had to sweep a conference series and fallen just short," said USU head coach Steve Johnson. "Kellie threw well for most of the game, and the defense was solid behind her. Offensively, we didn't have much life today. I have to give credit to (Kelsey) Boardus for coming in and throwing a great game."
With the loss, Utah State falls to 23-8 overall, and 6-3 against Mountain West opponents. Boise State improves to 22-11 on the year and 4-5 in league play with the win.
For the first time in the weekend series, Boise State was first to score Sunday. With one out and a runner on, the Broncos got on the board with a two-run home run to right field. Boise State added another double in the inning, but a pair of groundouts ended the attempt.
The defenses battled through the next five innings. Utah State got runners on through a walk and a fielder's choice, but the Aggies' first hit of the day came in the top of the fourth, on a triple from Jaramillo.
Utah State's biggest inning came in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Jaramillo delivered a solo shot to right field, putting the Aggies on the board. Freshman outfielder Riley Plogger then drew a walk, and was able to score on a double from senior designated player Sydney Hart, tying the score at two.
Boise State was quick to respond though, adding another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Broncos led-off with a double, followed by a single with the runner advancing to second on the throw. A third runner then reached on a fielder's choice, followed by a single to score a run and put Boise State back in the lead. Later, with two outs and the bases loaded, a bunt single plated another run for the Broncos.
Utah State went down in order in the top of the seventh, ending the game.
On the day, Boise State tallied nine hits to the Aggies' three.
" Despite winning the first two games, we didn't have consistent quality at-bats and that finally caught up with us today," Johnson said. "We showed some life at the end, but we just need to be more consistent throughout the game."
Utah State returns to Logan for four home games this week. The Aggies will host in-state rival BYU on Wednesday, April 5, at 4 p.m. Conference play will then continue over the weekend, as USU hosts Fresno State for a three-game series, starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 7.
