Utah State soccer opened its final weekend of non-conference competition on a high note Friday, as it defeated Eastern Michigan, 2-1, on the road.
With the win, Utah State improves to 4-2-1 on the season while Eastern Michigan falls to 3-4-1.
Freshman midfielder Ashley Cardozo led the Aggies to the win, scoring both goals of the day. With the pair, she is now at five goals on the season. The five are the most goals by a Utah State freshman since the 2008 season, when Shantel Flanary finished her freshman campaign with five goals.
The Aggies dominated possession early, controlling the offense throughout the first half. Utah State took 10 shots through the first 45 minutes, with senior forward Bailee Hammond leading the way with four. USU had four shots on frame in the first half, but couldn't quite find the back of the net.
After the break, the Aggies' pace slowed a bit, but the offense, anchored by Cardozo, stayed in control. Cardozo eventually put Utah State on the board, striking in the 65th minute on a shot from 20 yards out. Later, in the 82nd minute, she added to the total as she capitalized on a free kick, curving the ball into the top left corner of the net.
The Eagles evaded the shutout in the final seconds of the match, scoring a goal with just 15 seconds remaining.
On the day, Utah State out-shot Eastern Michigan, 17-11, a season-high for the Aggies. USU also matched its season high for shots on goal with nine, while the Eagles tallied three. Senior Sara Cobb played the full match in the net for USU, picking up two saves.
Utah State will conclude the non-conference portion of its season this weekend, remaining in Michigan for a match at Oakland. The Aggies and Golden Grizzlies will meet Sunday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. (MT).
