LOGAN, Utah - Utah State volleyball wrapped up a two-match road trip on Saturday night with a three-set loss at Colorado State. The defeat dropped the Aggies to 3-16 overall and 1-7 in the Mountain West, while CSU moved to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in league play.
Sophomore outside Gabbi Shumway led the Utah State attack with eight kills, while freshman middle Corinne Larsen proved to be the most efficient hitter for the Aggies, hitting .333 (5-2-9). Senior setter Kassidy Johnson logged 20 of the Aggies' 22 total assists, while senior libero Tasia Taylor recorded double-digit digs for the 13th consecutive match, leading USU with 11.
Colorado State jumped on the Aggies early, scoring the opening four points in the first set and taking a 6-1 lead. Both teams hit well in the opening set as Utah State hit .364 (11-3-22), but the Rams hit .515 (19-2-33) to capture the first set 25-12.
The USU attack cooled over the next two sets as Colorado State continued to hit on all cylinders, as the Aggies hit .000 in both the second and third sets. Meanwhile, CSU hit .429 (15-3-28) in the second and .382 (17-4-34) in the third to close out the match 25-12 and 25-12.
The teams played through five ties in the second set before Colorado State broke away with a five-point run. The Rams then opened the third set with a 6-1 start en route to the wire-to-wire victory.
Colorado State was led by a pair of double-digit attackers in junior middle Paulina Hougaard-Jensen and redshirt junior Kirstie Hillyer with 16 and 10 kills, respectively. Hougaard-Jensen finished the night hitting .727 (16-0-22) and added a team-best five blocks.
Utah State will be back in action next week, hosting Boise State on Tuesday, Oct. 16, followed by a match against Air Force on Thursday, Oct. 18. Both contests are scheduled for 7 p.m., on Kirby Court in the Wayne Estes Center.
