SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Utah State volleyball lost a three-set decision at San Diego State on Thursday night, moving to 5-19 on the year and 3-10 in the Mountain West.
USU hit .128 (28-17-86) during the match to San Diego State's .300 (41-40-90), as freshman outside Whitney Solosabal led the Aggie attack with 10 kills, hitting a career-best .421 (10-2-19). Senior setter Kassidy Johnson recorded 20 of Utah State's 24 assists, while senior libero Tasia Taylor led the USU back row with a team-high seven digs.
Utah State broke a 5-5 tie in the opening set with a four-point run, part of five-straight points, to take a 9-5 lead. The Aztecs then used a four-point run on their own to tie it up at 9-all, with the teams then playing to another tie at 15-15. San Diego State ultimately took the set 25-22, despite a kill by USU's Solosabal that extended the frame on the Aztecs' first set point at 24-22.
The Aggies tied it up at 9-all in the second set after a San Diego State error, but the Aztecs scored eight straight points for a 17-9 advantage. USU would go on to score the next two points to make it 17-11, however, that was the closest they would get as San Diego State scored eight of the final 12 points to take the set, 25-15, and a two-set lead.
The Aggies never settled into an offensive rhythm in the third set, hitting -.033 (6-7-30) in the frame, while San Diego State hit .143 (13-8-35) en route to the 25-20 finish.
San Diego was led on the attack by junior outside Hannah Turnlund with 13 kills, followed by senior middle Deja Harris and junior middle Tamia Reeves with nine kills apiece. Junior outside Ashlynn Dunbar led the Aztec back row with a match-high 11 digs.
