LOGAN, UTAH – Utah State volleyball wrapped up its 2018 season on Saturday, losing in three sets at Air Force, 13-25, 12-25, 17-25. With the finish, USU punctuated its season with an overall mark of 5-24, including a 3-15 ledger in Mountain West play.
Sophomore right side Bailey Downing led the Aggies with a team-best six kills as Utah State hit -.022 (19-21-93) during the match to Air Force's .239 (41-19-92). Senior setter Kassidy Johnson recorded 16 of the Aggies' total 19 assists and also led the back row with a match-high-tying eight digs.
Air Force opened the first set with a 13-3 run and was able to ride the momentum to an eventual 25-13 finish. A similar run followed for the Falcons in the second set, taking an early 12-4 lead and carrying over the start to the eventual 25-12 finish.
Utah State scored the first two points of the third set behind a pair of Air Force errors and maintained the advantage before a four-point run by the Falcons gave the home side a 7-5 lead. AFA then used a 6-1 run to create an eight-point cushion later in the set, leading 18-10, and finished the match by scoring four of the final five points to take the victory, 25-17.
Junior outside Denise Ssozi led Air Force with a match-high nine kills, while a trio of Falcons all tied for the team lead with eight digs in Ssozi, senior libero Sarah Hellman and sophomore setter Andi Ahlers.
