LOGAN, Utah - Utah State head men's basketball coach
Craig Smith has announced the addition of Alphonso Anderson, a junior college transfer who will have two years of eligibility remaining, to the 2019-20 signing class. Anderson will join the Aggies by way of North Idaho College, where he led the Cardinals with 20 points and seven rebounds in the season opener on Nov. 17.
Anderson, a 6-7 forward, originally signed with Montana out of Garfield High School in Seattle, Wash., where he led the team to a state championship as a junior, scoring 17 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in the championship game. That season, Anderson averaged 16.6 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game, while shooting 52 percent from the floor and 37 percent from behind the 3-point line. As a prep senior at GHS, Anderson led the team to a third-place finish at state and averaged 13 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, recording his best game against Rainier Beach, scoring 35 points and pulling down 19 rebounds. Anderson will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"Alphonso can do a little bit of everything, and at 6-7, 225 pounds, he is going to be a difficult matchup for opponents," Smith said. "He rebounds the ball well and can defend multiple positions, which gives us great flexibility to utilize him in a number of different positions."
Utah State returns to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 21, facing Arizona State in Las Vegas, Nev., inside the T-Mobile Arena in the championship of the MGM Main Event at 9 p.m. (MT). Fans can watch the game live on ESPNU (DirecTV 208, Dish 141).
