HONOLULU, Hawaii – Junior running back
Darwin Thompson rushed for a 141 yards and three touchdowns – both career highs – as No. 18 Utah State extended its winning streak to eight straight after defeating Hawai'i 56-17 late Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.
Fellow junior running back
Gerold Bright added 121 yards rushing and a career-high three TDs of his own for the Aggies (8-1, 5-0 Mountain West), whose eight consecutive wins are the second-longest in school history, trailing the 1961 team that won its first nine games.
Sophomore quarterback
Jordan Love completed 10-of-13 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown, to go along with 13 yards rushing and another score, before leaving in the second quarter due to injury.
Despite not having their starting signal caller, the Aggies were just fine with backup
Henry Colombi at the helm. The redshirt freshman quarterback completed 9-of-11 passes for 48 yards while orchestrating four third-quarter scoring drives.
Utah State racked up 601 yards of total offense, while limiting Hawaii to 390 total yards.
Sophomore linebacker
David Woodward led the Aggies defensively with seven tackles, including an interception. Junior cornerback
DJ Williams also had an interception.
The Aggie offense was on fire early, amassing 240 total yards and 28 points in the first quarter alone. Senior wide receiver
Ron'quavion Tarver started the fireworks show for Utah State when he caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Love.
Utah State's next three first-quarter scores came courtesy of the ground game as Thompson scored on a 1-yard run, Bright found paydirt from 18 yards out and Love added a 1-yard TD run of his own.
The Aggie defense was equally up to the challenge in the first half as it limited the high-powered Rainbow Warriors (6-5, 3-3) to 220 total yards and a 41-yard field goal off the foot of Ryan Meskell. USU led 28-3 at the break.
USU scored touchdowns on all four of its third-quarter possessions, the first two courtesy of Thompson. The first of Thompson's two TDs in the quarter was as good as they come as he broke a total of seven tackles on his way to a 26-yard score. He added a 1-yarder with 7:19 to go in the third, giving the visitors a 42-11 lead.
Not to be outdone by his backfield mate, Bright scored on touchdown runs of 47 and 9 yards, respectively, helping the Aggies open a 56-11 lead with 3:16 left in the third.
Utah State has now won seven of its last eight Mountain West games dating back to last season, including five of the last six on the road.
