LOGAN, Utah -
Boise State 11, Utah State 1 (5)
Utah State softball opened its home and Mountain West seasons Friday, falling to Boise State, 11-1, in five innings. Sophomore Kellie White made the start against the Broncos, pitching 2.2 innings before being relieved by senior Jordyn McCracken. Together, the two struck out two batters and walked five.
With the loss, Utah State falls to 9-12 overall and 0-1 in Mountain West play. Boise State improves to 16-8 on the year and opens the conference season at 1-0.
Utah State's sole run of the day came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior catcher Brina Buttacavoli worked the count full, including five foul balls, before picking up the Aggies' first hit of the game with a home run to center field. Utah State would have one more hit in the game, as senior third baseman Amee Aarhus singled to second base in the bottom of the fifth.
Boise State took control early in the game and scored at least one run in each of the first four innings. The Broncos put up single runs in the first and second. The first batter of the day reached base on a USU error, later scoring on a single. In the second, a pair of walks and a fielder's choice quickly put runners on, and brought one in with a single.
The Broncos' biggest inning was the top of the third, where they plated six runs on four hits. After a two-run double, the Aggies made their pitching change, but Boise State immediately followed with a three-run home run. The Broncos added another three runs in the top of the fourth, and held the Aggies off to secure the run-rule victory.
On the day, Boise State tallied 11 hits to Utah State's two, while the Aggies had three errors in the contest. The remaining games of the series between Utah State and Boise State are dependent on the weather. Announcements will be made at utahstateaggies.com and on the Utah State Softball social media pages.
